Rails and bridges rebuilt deepen Oregon routes

The O R & N and related lines undergo major upgrades from Burnt River to Huntington with five feet of ballast and 60 pound rails replacing older 60 pound steel. Tunnels widen, wooden bridges replaced by steel, and new engines to boost capacity. About 200 workers on the Oregon lines, $1,000,000 to be invested, with stockholders planning up to $2,000,000 for more improvements in Oregon and Washington this year. Tourists praising coast railroad equipment note superior trucks, coaches, and track versus eastern lines, as upgrades extend toward Nampa with an oil track treatment to reduce dust. A recent test of oiling a segment near Summerfield field shows a durable asphalt-like surface that repels water and dust, aiming to improve summer travel conditions.
