Oscar F. Thomson an early day sheriff of Umatilla died in Echo at 11 30 this forenoon after a lingering illness. Doctors differ on cause and a post mortem will be held this afternoon. Funeral at Echo Sunday at 10 30. Thomson born 1830 Missouri. moved to California 1850 and to Oregon 1864. Survived by wife Susan Atwood and 10 children, 7 living, plus 10 grandchildren and 3 brothers. Continued on Page Ten.

In La Grande Oregon on June 4 an accidental dynamite blast blew Joe Vartelany to pieces while he tried to re arrange a charge to blast a tree on a spur line near the George Palmer lumber camp. Funeral held at Elgin with no known relatives. Known as Dynamite Joe, about 40, past life unknown.

Masked Men Overpower Bay Area Watchman and Engineer
In Berkeley California three masked men overpowered the watchman Rasmus Jensen and the engineer at a local fertilizer plant. They tied Jensen’s hands and feet and gagged him before dumping him into an empty freight car. The robbers escaped on a launch and are suspected to belong to a band of bay pirates terrorizing citizens. The engineer was knocked unconscious by a blow from one of the attackers.
