Reports from Mexico City and El Paso on June 2 describe rising anarchy and food shortages across states. Government officials fear famine as prices soar. minor governors resign while Madero faces calls to regain control.
June 2 nine hundred pounds of opium valued at 27000 was seized aboard the Japanese vessel American Maru after quarantine near San Francisco. The contraband was hidden in the fore peak water tank in nine metal cylinders of 100 pounds each. Each cylinder bore a flotation line and two handles. Authorities scoured manholes to reach the cache, with more seizures expected as the search continues. The opium will be dissolved in hot water and disposed of into a sewer.
Henry J. Duveen of Duveen Brower International art dealers pleaded guilty to undervaluations of imports in U S circuit court. The firm has already paid 1 200 000 to the government in settlement of civil suits and an additional 15 000 maximum fine was imposed.
Stage carpenter Hugh McIntosh of Climax company was pinned beneath scenery moved from Empire theater in Strathcona to the Co. PL depot Saturday evening. Injuries were reported as potentially fatal as a heavy pyramid of stage settings toppled onto him while being hauled along a rough path to the railway.
Washington June 2 A World wide movement to fix steel and iron prices was discussed by Gary before the House steel investigating committee. A world combination is planned to regulate prices and be formed in Truswell around July 6. He urged government supervision and drastic anti trust legislation to bring big interstate corporations under control.
San Francisco June 2 Chief of police Seymour is suspended today by the police commission. President Sullivan resigned. Seymour's trial is set for June 7. G A White of the San Francisco Gas Company was named chief of police. White rushed to take the oath to block a writ to delay Nim's ouster.
New York June 2 Edison unveils a storage battery claimed to overcome weight bulk and long charge time. He says a wagon sized unit fits a suitcase and can be charged in five minutes. Members of the National Electric Light Association discuss the claims and potential impact.
Vancouver June 2 Unione the Master Builders association agrees to refer to arbitration their dispute with the carpenters 5000 union workmen plan to quit next Sunday Many carpenters machinists and bakers already strike and thirteen other unions join in the walkout arguing the issue has shifted from wages to the principle of a closed shop.
Rome June 2 Andre Beaumont and Roland Garros lead the Paris to Rome race and are resting in Rome while others suffer mishaps across France. Garros arrived with a shoulder injury from a crash near Fien, Beaumont expects to start the final Rome to Turin leg. Frey remains in pit, Vidert and Kimmerling endure crashes, Bathiat and Lucca face delays and landings amid fog and wrecks across southern France.
Prominent national rabbis take part in the three day dedication of the new Temple Beth El in Buffalo. Exercises began today and continue through the next two days with ceremonial rites and readings.
In Scranton Pennsylvania at the Keystone consistory Scottish Rite Masons began a two day reunion with many leading Pennsylvania Masons in attendance.
An assistant manager for the Sell-Floto circus in Pendleton was wounded by a hobo who jumped aboard a train to steal a ride. The bullet hit Monhager Brown in the arm. Brown is in La Grande hospital with non fatal injuries. Suspects were evicted earlier and are being sought by local officers.
A fifty year old man named Martin Ford faced charges after Lillian Steele a fifteen year old woman in love with him killed herself by throwing before a train. The tragedy followed failed marriage hopes and mounting objections from relatives.
The Sells Floto circus opened in Pendleton with the first arrival of the season. A grand free street parade wound through town with bands, elephants led by a big girl named Mamma, and riders in tights. The big tent show followed, with the brass band playing as curtains rose to reveal the Grand Tournament and illuminated pageantry.

Galveston June 2 soldiers are filed in the army hospital here after suffering sunstroke and prostration during General Mills brigade's 500 mile trek to Galveston from Houston and back. The temperature ranged from 4 to 106 degrees. Over 400 men dropped out. several suffered from concussion.
Washington June 2. Reports say Lorimer will resign before June 30 after the Senate voted for a second investigation of his election. A subcommittee of the privileges and elections committee, eight members split evenly between Republicans and Democrats, will conduct the inquiry. Debates over the plan lasted seven hours, ending 48 to 20 in favor of the subcommittee method.
Captain Steve O Donnelde of the Literatorces at Tia Tiana arrives in Los Angeles to confer with ADNTA leaders, avoiding discussion of General Pryce's disappearance. The meeting centers on unspecified topics while Pryce's fate remains unaddressed.

Washington June 2 The House majority plans to push the Underwood tariff bill with 20 percent ad valorem on foreign wool. The Democratic caucus lasted 12 hours and endorsed the measure except for free wool. Bryan condemns the policy while urging clear protection for wool. The bill was introduced by Burleson of Texas and the House adjourned until Tuesday.
Annapolis June 2 The graduation exercises and ball followed by plans for a summer voyage abroad were announced. Middies will embark tomorrow aboard the squadron led by Town Indiana and Massachusetts with commanders Hutchinson Nulton and Marwell. Coontz will command the midshipmen as ranking officer of the squadron.
A condensed report notes Mikado engines tested on the Pendleton to La Grande mountain division. The locomotives, far more powerful than ordinary engines, are expected to haul 600 to 700 tons on the grade, with estimates suggesting up to 1000 tons over a certain section. Six engines will be dispatched for mountain service.
