The Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition opens at 8:30 with opening addresses and cheering minutes. Telegrams of congratulations arrive from officials and President Read. A banquet for notables follows in the evening as speeches are delivered and the fair officially inaugurates.
The President sent a telegram praising the auspicious opening of the A Y P exposition. It commends the Northwest for courage and enterprise in showcasing Alaska's natural resources and wealth. It urges the expo to educate and inspire visitors and to appeal to people nationwide.
Seattle June 1 crowds cheer as the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition opens with Taft telegraph message and a 60 000 strong audience in the amphitheatre. Gates opened at 8 30 am 11 o clock opening ceremonies featured Bishop Dea and Keater, Nadeau, and James J Hill with President Chilberg. Banquet in New York state building to follow.

In Sausalito California sixteen year old Jane Sheldon clung to a sinking boat as waves from a passing steamer overturned it. A shepherd dog named Squire kept the girl afloat until Newton Faucet, a Reno mining man visiting the Sheldon home, reached the scene and saved her. The dog then led rescuers to the girl.
San Francisco June 1 Hirshfield once linked with T R Rickey in Nevada banking is charged with embezzlement by the Esmeralda county grand jury. He was arrested at the St Francis hotel after meeting with Calhoun attorney Earl Rogers. Former cashier of the State Bank and Trust Company of Nevada, Rickey led the bank when it failed about a year and a half ago. the arrest is believed tied to that failure.
Chicago June 1 Application of the new rates from Chicago to the Pacific coast, under the Spokane rate case, has been postponed from today to July 1 to permit a hearing for Hill Harriman lines before the Interstate Commerce Commission on June 9.
Chicago on June 1 announced exceptionally low rates to the east from Chicago and other western and southwestern cities in an effort to redirect summer tourist traffic from northern and western resorts to the Atlantic seaboard.
In Umatilla county a 600 acre unimproved wheat land parcel sold for 37,500 dollars at 75 dollars per acre to Louis Koebeke. The J. K. Rott farm near Helix has no improvements, making this a notable low-asset sale and possibly the best wheat land deal in the region. Koebeke, experienced in the area, will take possession immediately.
Portland June 1 William Hanley a wealthy rancher was found guilty of maintaining and controlling an illegal enclosure of eighty ten acres of government land in Harney county. The maximum penalty is a thousand dollars and one year in jail. He may file a motion for a new trial within thirty days. The verdict surprised him and he said he did not think the evidence warranted conviction. The jury deliberated after 4 pm yesterday and returned this morning after a sleepless night.
The U S Supreme Court granted a rehearing of cases involving Hamilton County officers and citizens in the lynching of Ka Johnson, a Black man from Chattaqua. They face contempt of court charges for allegedly violating an injunction by allowing the lynching and for participating in it.
Swearingen brothers sold the popular Pendleton French restaurant to J M Royer of Pilot Rock. The deal closed yesterday with Royer in charge as manager Mrs Royer oversees upstairs rooms and Miss Royer acts as cashier. The Royers previously ran the Pilot Rock hotel and aim to preserve the eatery’s welcome and standing with travelers and locals.
Seattle residents report burglars entered the home of John England near Alki Point and stole a package said to contain 20000 in bills. The money belonged to Mrs. A. J. Shea of Duluth Minnesota visiting Mrs. England. It was sent by registered mail for investment in Seattle real estate. The package was hidden in a mattress and recovered after the theft by a basement-window entry.
The Civic Federation starts a drive to shut down the redlight district in Minneapolis on June 1. Many houses have already closed as proprietors fear the new state law making it a felony to accept maintenance from certain women. Property owners who take rent from these women may face prosecution by the federation.
Henry Heisler and wife, former Valley House proprietor, were killed when their car overturned at the Blalock county road junction between College Place and Walla Walla. Mrs Heisler, internals injuries, hospital. husband with head injuries but not believed seriously hurt. An oncoming car seen just before the wreck. speed to overtake led to loss of control and plunge down the embankment.

Portland June 1 J H Hall former state district attorney of Portland was sentenced this afternoon to 60 days in county jail and fined 1000 dollars after the motion for a new trial was overruled in a conspiracy case against the government.

Philadelphia June 1 fewer cars run today than during the platform men strike. The city faces a possible general walkout of all trades unions affecting 75,000 workers. Hundreds of cars operate, far below the normal 3,000 as professional strikebreakers refuse to work. Strike leaders warn the stoppage could last months if demands are not met.
President Taft in the East Room pressed the gold key to formally open the Seattle exposition. The ceremony was witnessed by Mrs Taft many diplomats 40 senators and representatives delegates from the Philippines Hawaii Alaska and Porto Rico. Senator Piles of Washington replied to Taft's address.

Frames of bricks in his pockets and a pass book showing $2100 in deposits suggest Charles Mitchell as the possible name. He had likely been in the water about two weeks.
Fifty Chicago business men will ride a special train to Pendleton on Friday June 11 for a three hour visit hosted by the Credit Men's Association. The train arrives from the north at 1 36 PM and will be greeted by Pendleton's entire business delegation followed by a motor tour through the wheat belt to view local fields. The day’s program is being finalized by a committee to ensure a pleasant visit.
