Portland dispatch reports both Governor Chamberlain and H M Cake claiming victory in the Senate race after today’s election while rumors place Chamberlain ahead due to a heavy vote. Prohibitionist results remain disputed and woman suffrage appears defeated though university appropriation seems secure. The liquor question dominates with 29 of 33 counties voting and two large precinct contests in the remaining counties.
Ely Nevada June 1 reports twelve inches of snow over the city and region. It was the heaviest snow storm of the year with no reports of serious damage. The storm was general between Ely and Corble.
Princeton reports Cleveland is resting well and none the worse for his automobile ride from Lakewood last night. His physician refused to discuss specifics.
Portland detectives hunt James Mee Menamin a Star guest at the Portland Hotel and fugitive accused of stealing diamonds worth 21000 from M Fleischman Co of Chicago. A larceny charge valued at 7000 is placed for the diamonds in his possession at disappearance.
Wool buyers moved from Heppner to Shaniko with a Portland train, as Shaniko hosts a sale tomorrow and Yale 4 miles away on June 65. At Heppner the top price reached 144.4 cents per pound with lows near 51.8 cents. Columbia river wool, sandy this year, saw about 1,500,000 pounds change hands over the two days.
John Behrenson a saloon swamper from Weston was arrested after allegedly attempting to assault the three year old daughter of Mr and Mrs Frank Saling. The child was found missing, and the suspect was captured in a vacant house near the victim’s home. He faces up to 20 years in the penitentiary. Indignation spread through Weston and the nearby city as the community learned of the alleged crime against a well regarded family.
Harry Charge-Eagle a Sioux performer with the Sells-Floto circus is dead after a drunken brawl near the circus grounds in Walla Walla. Black Eagle, his comrade, lies in critical condition at St Marys hospital as both heads were crushed with a club. Authorities seek those involved while circus officials promise a full investigation and possible arrests after the train departed.
