Rathie Captured Near John Thompson Ranch Above Gibbon

A morning capture near John Thompson Ranch above Gibbon led to the arrest of Jack Rathie and a bring to the county jail at 11 50. He is the third murderer of Sheriff Til Taylor to be taken since midnight with Hart and Owens in jail at La Grande. A party of Gibbon men helped seize Rathie after a neighborhood pursuit, with officers and residents recounting the escape attempts and the trail taken.

Neil Hart and Jim Owens, who escaped from Umatilla county jail, were arrested at 12 40 this morning by a La Grande posse at Johnson s sheep camp Spout springs six miles this side of Tollgate north of Summerville The men had been tracked after witnesses reported sightings near Green Mountain on the main divide trail Toward Tollgate Federal Patrolman Courtney and Ranger Sibbe organized pursuit with two posse parties They found the trail and followed it until nightfall The third posse joined from Meacham with Sheriff Warnick and dogs The fugitives were located asleep in a sheep herder s camp handcuffed and guarded Each carried a gun and 26 bullets They claimed to have eaten only bread since Sunday andWednesday night after robbing a sheep camp. Hart Arrogant Says Local Man Coming From La Grande

Neil Hart angry but in good spirits upon arrival at Union county jail in La Grande with Jim Owens after a mountain trek. Claude Miles reported from La Grande that Hart spoke briefly, many questions limited his chance to explain. They slept in a tent with a sheep herder nearby at the Johnson corrals near Green Mountain, miles noted. Murderers to Pendleton Tomorrow in Jail Transfer Plan

Neil Hart and Jim Owens will be brought to Umatilla county jail tomorrow morning on No. 19 from La Grande arriving at 6:30 p.m. Sheriff Taylor, Special Agent Wood of the OWRR and R, and Asa Thomason will oversee. The trio escaped, but return and face first degree murder charges under Oregon law.
