Baseball Players Get Extended Time for War Service
Washington July 36 professional baseball players were given until September 1 to seek civilian employment or report for military service in an order issued by the War Department. Secretary Baker said the extension was granted because players may be more adaptable than others and that the order would be enforced only after a suitable declaration is made. Provost Marshal Crowder indicated it was not yet certain the game would stop if the order became effective immediately, since only about 237 major league players would be affected.
