A heat wave grips Clinton Iowa with temperatures above 103 degrees F driving over a hundred people to collapse or prostrate. Reports from New York indicate widespread suffering as the heat causes several individuals to be driven insane.
Chicago reports eighteen deaths and over a hundred prostrations as heat sweeps from the Atlantic to the Rockies. West and south of Chicago suffer most as crops burn and livestock perish. St Paul records four prostrations and two insanity cases in one day. New York reports widespread prostrations and several deaths with hospitals stretched to capacity.
Des Moines reports extreme heat withering crops across southern Iowa. Losses run into thousands as pastures suffer severe drought conditions.
Indianapolis records the city’s highest temperature and extreme humidity with related cases of mental distress and suicide attempts. In Omaha, July 20 reports the sixth hot day of the season with forecasts of temperatures exceeding 100 before nightfall.
A sharp but brief weather change swept Columbus as a 15 minute gust produced a noticeable humidity spike near 100 percent. The Weather Bureau attributed the drop in temperature to a slight cooling that caused water to condense and fall from the atmosphere.
San Francisco July 30 Diggs and Caminetti entered pleas of not guilty to charges of violating the Mann white slave act before Federal Judge Van Fleet. Diggs trial set for next Tuesday Caminetti’s to follow immediately after.
Senator Weeks of Massachusetts, a Republican banking committee member, urged Secretary McAdoo to publish the evidence behind his charge that banks marked up two percent bonds. He warned that without proof the statement would appear as propaganda to influence Congress and the business community.
Reports from passengers aboard the liner Persia describe Moro outlaws using 196 women and 340 children as shields during a three day clash with American troops at Mountabang Philippines. General Pershing's forces killed 1600 Moro fighters in the crater of a volcano. twenty six Americans died.
Premium lists for the first annual Umatilla County Fair have been received from the state printer and are ready for distribution. The book contains all exhibitor information and notes prospects are good for a creditable fair with a strong exhibitor turnout. The association plans nightly entertainment and the publication includes a free advertisement for the Roundup.
Felix Diaz arrived in San Diego and announced plans to travel to Los Angeles, declaring his candidacy for the Mexican presidency in October. He denied any mission to Japan other than to thank it for participating in the centennial celebration. Threats against Diaz were heard in the Mexican quarter and three Mexicans were ejected from Santa Fe wharf by guards protecting Diaz.
July 30 Washington insurgents and conservatives of the house banking committee urged Bryan to back the currency bill. Representatives Henry Bulkley and Ragsdale sought his support. Bryan said he endorses the Glass Owen bill’s principal features, avoids factional fights, and hopes factions unite for harmony.
J R English of Weston, a former county teacher turned civil engineer, says natives in the Philippine Islands are not ready for self government. He cites political bribery, ignorant voter base, and a divided press, while noting U S control remains necessary. Schools, modern farming and a university system are enlarging knowledge among natives as American teachers supervise. English plans a summer leave and may not return to the islands.
At the first meeting of the charter committee ten sub committees were appointed by Judge Lowell to draft assigned sections of the proposed charter. The group will report next Tuesday. after full charter is prepared, initiative petitions will push the measure to voters in October. Meeting on courthouse lawn. harmony except for W L Thompson’s protest over sub committee appointments. Next session to be held on Episcopal church lawn if weather permits. Sub committees will use the existing charter as a standard and update sections including Name Boundary Seal Art 1, Present Charter and Ordinances Art XVI, and other articles on government, powers, streets, health, water, and franchises.
Enver Bey, leader of Turkish forces who seized Adrianople from the Bulgarians, vows no surrender saying the city is sacred and will be held or died for. He asserts the army is resolved to hold it to the last man.
Hammond Indiana July 20 A lake shore and Michigan Southern freight train passing through Pine was held up by bandits and cars filled with valuable merchandise were broken into in the raid. Brakeman J R Rorle was badly wounded and died later at a church hospital. Three men were arrested at Indiana Harbor by railroad detectives who say they are connected with the crime.
San Francisco July 30. The absorption of Western Pacific by the Denver Rio Grande is the latest finance railroad plan. Proposed by Missouri Pacific President Bush who owns both roads, the move could lead to unification of all three lines into a single system soon.
Atlanta July reports say W. W. Finley will retire as president of the Southern Railway on September 1 to take the presidency of either the Southern or Union Pacific.

Secretary of the Navy Daniels and Mrs Daniels visited Spokane. He addressed crowds at Fort George Wright and honored Ensign John R Monakhan by wreathing his monument. He praised teamwork, cited Inland cities’ interest in the navy, and planned to depart for the east after the visit.
Portland officials and witnesses heard a conference under the compulsory minimum wage provisions. The Industrial Welfare Commission is urged to set a minimum weekly wage of 8.64 dollars for women in manufacturing and to limit employment to nine hours a day, 64 hours a week.
Butte July 30 two miners J Murphy and Patrick J Fallon were fatally shocked while working on the mine surface when a 2300 volt live line touched a steel cable they held. The accident occurred as the cable bridged the high power line and the men received the fatal current.
Guaymas wireless dispatches describe a fierce clash in Sonora where federal forces routed rebels. Both sides suffered heavy casualties, rebels reportedly retreating toward Hermosillo and peace efforts in the United States appearing stalled. News from Washington notes lack of progress in the Mexican peace movement and reassurances about American safety amid reports of looting near Frontera.
Ambassador Wilson urged the United States to recognize Huerta during a four hour session with the senate foreign relations committee. He outlined political and economic conditions in Mexico supporting his argument.

The decision leaves Johns exempt from paying Jackson street paving costs while raises debate on who covers the roughly 400 dollar assessment and possible liability for the Warren Construction Co. Legal figures foresee contested outcomes as waivers and ten year payment options complicate who pays.
