Garfield appears out as standpatters seize control of the convention. Garfield likely to withdraw from the gubernatorial race. Senator Burton named permanent chairman. Platform endorses a second Taft term and administration support.
In Columbus on July 27 Warren Harding secured the Ohio gubernatorial nomination on the third ballot. He led from the start with only Brown and Harding officially presented. The platform is described as the strongest stand yet produced by the convention.
At Columbus on July 27 the standpat Pinatform was adopted with only scattered noes in the viva voce vote. Garfield is seen as beaten and likely to withdraw from the gubernatorial race. Regular candidates favored Carmin Thompson O B Brown and Warren Harding. Senator Burton elected permanent chairman as the convention began. The platform endorses Taft for a second term backs his administration supports ship subsidy a large navy harbor improvements an anti trust amendment for faster justice and conservation. Taft praised for 16 months in office. Regulars win slight wire margin over progressives. Paul Howland defeated for resolutions chairmanship by Senator Dick 15 to 3. Howland warned of minority report. The Cunard Ine steamer Franconia, built for the Boston service, was successfully launched Saturday in Wallsend on Tyne. It stands as the largest steamship on the east coast of England except for the Manchuria, with a great crowd in attendance.

Tragic boiler explosion at the Coquille Mill and Mercantile Co. Instalmht plant in Marshfield Oregon damages the town and injures engineer F. B. A skeleton found on Newport Beach may be Maker Sophia Nolee of Blodgett, Oregon. Her sister arrives tonight to try identifying the remains as authorities note a prior note about self-harm may have been a forgery. Coroner Carter believes foul play, while Sheriff Ross says no larger search until the killer is caught.
Chicago July 27 A buildings and trades council order a general strike of all construction workers in buildings using Otis Elevator systems. About 1800 workers will be affected as nearly all large Chicago projects fall under the order. The strike follows failed federation talks over jurisdiction between elevator constructors and machinists unions. Otis is backed by contractors and the building trade council.
Arthur Heinze brother of F Augustus Heinze was arrested today in federal circuit court amid a motion for a stay of execution of a ten day sentence. Heinze was sentenced for Interfering with the administration of Justice and was released on $2500 bail until the October session.
Frank Wade and Christopher Smith, both criminally insane, escaped with three other patients from the Insane asylum yesterday. The other four were recaptured. Wade and Smith remain at large, Wade the more dangerous and in for murder, Smith for robbery. A posse pursues them after they broke through a window grate, Smith headed toward Portland while Wade is linked to an 1890s murder in Jackson County.
The war fitness of the English fleet will be severely tested in the forthcoming manoeuvre. All ships except torpedo craft and submarines will remain at sea for four weeks with port entry allowed only under exceptional circumstances. Shore communication will be by wireless and a regular scout service.
In Paris a court ruled that an aviation accident at Javisy on October 13 was due to force majeure. The aviator, blamed by prosecutors for inexperience, was acquitted as the plane landed among spectators causing injuries.

Firemen pursued and captured the assailant after cries of Ioneh drew a crowd. He was jailed for 30 days on the rock pile. The girl said the man followed her from a dance and tried to take her away despite the mother present.
Tokio July 27. Despite efforts to locate the missing steamer Tetsuri Marie after it foundered near Chintao on July 23, no trace of passengers or crew has been found. One hundred and ninety six perished. officials hope lifeboats reached a landing and some survivors will be picked up.

An excursion by a pinel of Ober Utz school girls ended tragically when a 11 year old girl, chasing a hat blown off the head, slipped on a path and fell about 60 feet into a ravine. She was found unconscious and died soon after. skull fractured.
