Reports from Foonburg July 27 describe Russia's setbacks and English naval strength, with Russia and allies blamed for battles near ports and bombardments. The Moscow press notes strategic strains as British vessels deter Russian moves, while evacuations and ship movements complicate supply lines. Separate items report a flour shipment dispute with Arabia, a steamer released, and local incidents including a fatal fire and an outlaw chase.
A conference in Atlantic City between Bostonian Stock Opera manager and company members discussed disbanding after three weeks in the city. Poor profits from a lengthy Boston start and a large loss prompted consideration of winding up the corporation after its three year existence. Also noted: Denver dispatch on Chinese government orders punishment and indemnity for a killed journalist, Louis Eteel.
Engineer Miller submits reports on the East Main street sewer project in Lewiston with an estimated cost of 810,000 including a pumping plant at 735,000. The council will proceed if the public approves the proposed custom establishment.
Berlin reports on brutal acts by drunken Russian soldiers against Polish political prisoners in Kaliech Poland. Prisoners allegedly beaten with bayonets, eyes injured, limbs crushed, and many sent to hospital refusing treatment. Other items note Delavan assembly with Bryan as speaker, a public fountain project, a fatal domestic incident, a Grinnell bank closure, and early grain sales in Lewis ton and by Kettenbach Grain Company.
The Hop Market opened with J. A. Pooler hop crop selling Saturday afternoon for 22 cents to Callin & Linn and later to J. J. Metzler of Portland. Ninety three bales of prime Salem Stateaman hops were sold in the session.
Sagamore Hill July 27 Roosevelt accepts nomination by Republican committee. He pledges vigorous anti trust enforcement and argues for Panama Canal construction against Democrats. He defends past seven years and outlines tariff, reciprocity, and national interest policies. Cannon lauds the party’s record and leadership.
San Bernardino July 27 engineer Freeman of the Santa Fe railroad rescued hundreds of passengers aboard over land train No 2. Fire erupted from an oil feeder as the locomotive burned, Freeman plunged through burning oil to the throttle and diverted the engine down the track, stopping to allow the fire to burn out safely away from property.
A major cloudburst at New Harmony Utah, forty miles north of St. George, swept through the Mormon settlement this morning. A wall of water eight feet high carried away cattle, crops, orchards and twenty houses while all lives were saved.
In San Francisco on July 27 Manuel Roth killed Mrs Angie Parslow then shot himself in the Latin Quarter. The street killing was witnessed by many and jealousy is cited as the motive.
W H McComas of Union, a pioneer Oregon newspaper man, buys into the Haines Record and will thereafter be connected with that paper.
Boise election notes show no opposition to the anti Mormon faction in the city primary. Dubois men placed candidates and delegates chosen here will control the county convention. A Lewiston state convention delegation will support Dulles and Mormon policy.
Marion county artist Homer Davenport, famed for anti Democratic caricatures, turns to Republicans this campaign. His new cartoons depict Parker and other Democratic leaders in alliance with trusts. The works now appear in multiple Republican dailies as a peace talks note lingers. A Thibetan peace commission has met British forces to seek a bloodless settlement, with Britain slated to discuss peace after L'Hassa.
Baker City July 27 A Pacific States Telephone Linemen foreman Robert Sherman fell from a cable pole platform and died within an hour The prevailing belief is that he was killed by contact with a live wire while heat stroke was considered by some The crash left him with multiple injuries including a broken jaw crushed skull and severe trauma He was taken to St Elizabeth's hospital where he died without regaining consciousness.
Portland registered 1 degree at the heat meter yesterday, with Fresno 5, San Diego 14, Red Bluff 102, and Yuma 2. The day was the hottest here since the local weather bureau began tracking, aside from July 23 when the mercury reached 12.
Sixty one leaders including Hill August Belmont Taggart and Woodson arrived at Parker's home in Esopus. The party rode in a long procession of carriages and were greeted cordially though the meeting with Hill was not described as significant. The assembly mingled with Parker on the lawn after the handshake.
The county court will convene in August to consider renewal of warehouse bonds for the year, rebuild Birch Creek bridge near Pilot Rock, and review bids for about 140 cords of winter fuel wood. Eastern Oregon buyers seek horses suitable for irrigation ditch work after horses were recently brought here from the east.

Chicago reports a fatal bullet wound and a large fire at the Swifts Jard refinery injures none, while 400 Teamsters and 125 union cattle handlers are active. Independent packers repaint wagons to thwart strikers. Arbitration seeks renewed talks with packers as violence remains avoided.
In Omaha on July 22 the strike action quieted as packers pursue a peaceful settlement. Labor leaders and authorities discuss handling the situation without further disruption to shipments.
Nellie Clark of Salem daughter of Alexander Clark has been appointed to China by the Christian church. She is now in Salem and expects to leave for San Francisco to join the mission party September 21. Clark is a Willamette University graduate and has spent much of her life in Salem teaching in Polk County. She is the first foreign missionary appointed from Oregon by the Christian church.
