Underground Wires Topic At Pendleton Committee Session
The ordinance committee opened its first session as it plans a full investigation into placing electric and telephone wires underground in the business district. Mayor Murphy and several councilmen attended along with civic leaders. Secretary Keefe presented data showing varied rates elsewhere, with some towns 25 percent lower. A city engineer may be hired to study feasibility, with costs estimated at about 23000 per mile, while current Main and Court cluster lights on public streets generate about 1000 annually for the utility.

City weighs underground wiring plan and public utility profits
The council debated undergrounding wires as a cost effective renewal, arguing big poles renewal could boost light usage and help recoup expenses. Proponents said public service profits justify the move while opponents pressed for stricter rates and city interests. Mayor Murphy leaned toward the corporate side despite progressive backing.
