Battle for Oregon Senate Looms in 1919 Primaries
In the race to succeed Jonathan Bourne, both parties expect a lively contest before the 1919 legislature. Democratic leaders name John M Gearin as a leading potential candidate while Republicans brace for a fierce primary centered on Bourne. Stephen A Lowell and Pendleton’s political circles name Bourne’s main GOP challenge, with Jim Malarkey once considered a strong foe and others like William Bristol floated. The outcome hinges on party maneuvers, regional support, and appeals to progressive government sentiment.
