Report from Shanghat says about 10 000 southern rebels attacked Kiang Nan arsenal at 3 am Wednesday. Defenders about 2900, aided by the navy, repelled three attacks and held until 7 30. About 800 rebels killed. later attack at 1 am Thursday repulsed with higher casualties. Civilians suffered, shells damaged the French concession, and Foreign Volunteers guarded the settlement as a foreign brigade expected to land.
In Calumet and surrounding Copper country a violent clash erupted as more than a dozen deputies were injured and thousands of miners faced lockouts. About 15,000 miners were involved in a strike backed by the Western Federation against operators. Rioting closed night shifts and mobs attacked nonunion workers. Governor Ferris was urged to send troops to secure officials and release a captured sheriff.
Sam K. R. Thompson is appointed Round-up Livestock director after the resignation of James H. Sturgis who moved to Walla Walla. Thompson, a Pendleton farmer, will oversee stock purchases bucking horse selections and moving stock from paddocks to the arena during the show. He hesitated but will be free to devote needed time.
