Rival moves at Astoria threaten rail control war
The Sunday Oregonian reports Northern Pacific surveyors consider utilizing a route from Kelso to the Columbia mouth to ship Inland Empire wheat to Astoria and load ships there. The plan could skip towage and pilottage, lowering costs and triggering a contest between Harriman and Hill for the Astoria and Columbia River railroad. Indications suggest Hill may win a path, while Harriman eyes Oregon shore control. A B Hammond, owner of the Astoria line, is due in the city next week, possibly influencing the rumors.
