Baker City July 23 Local authorities believe a notorious horse and cattle rustler gang has been scattered following a county chase through Lookout Mountain terrain. Jim Hall Pollard and two unknowns fled the hills with William Hall captured and brought to town. Sheriff and posse pursued until Saturday night locating a windlass used for dressing beef. Attorneys say Hall will stand trial and deny links to rustling.
A large fire swept through Camden this morning burning the bus portion of the resort and causing rapid destruction. Reports indicate several buildings were blown apart as part of the emergency response amid chaos and heavy smoke. The incident follows a day of upheaval in the region.
Brooklyn July 23 The coroner's jury found Walt Latimer died at the hands of an unknown person. A private detective testified about shadowing William Tuthill, linked to Mrs Latimer's alleged infatuation, and saw him enter the Latimer residence while Latimer was away.
Mrs L Ray, wife of Mr Ray, arrived Tuesday with her husband. The couple hosted Mr and Mrs I L Ray, married in Chicago. Mrs Ray, formerly Miss Wood of Coopertown New York, is a noted music critic and author of Musical Romances. She will stay on the Sound for weeks.
New York July 23. Anthracite coal companies say no fixed date will be set to resume work. When the attempt to open mines in the strike district begins, it will be a general movement not limited to protected collieries. They deny using the strike to raise coal prices.
The United States Civil Service Commission will hold tests in September and October across several states to recruit youth for government service. About 126,428 classified positions exist with 46,736 filled in six years. An estimated 11,000 appointments may occur next year with salaries from 960 to 1,200 annually. Life appointments require mostly a common education, with politics or religion not considered. Free information is available from the Columbusian Correspondence College in Washington, D.C., requesting its 1902 civil service catalogue.

New York July 28 Miss Yohe says she is content to drop the matter if Captain Strong’s mother makes good the loss of Yohe’s jewels. Yohe, in spirits, plans to go to Japan to redeem jewels pawned there while Strong is due in two days. In Manila a cable reports teachers Wells, Thomas, Heger, and France were murdered by Ladrones. leaders killed and eight others captured.

Spokane July 23 Coroner Baker has ordered an inquest to determine the cause of death of the three children of Mrs G H Graham of this city It is claimed the mother belongs to a religious denomination that does not believe in medicine and that she refused to give them physicians aid when they were dying of diphtheria.
Mrs John Franz of Pittsburg asks police to arrest her husband for two decades of masquerading in feminine clothes spending all his money on lingerie and neglecting rent and grocery bills.
A mob of about 600 attacked police outside the Sisters of St Vincent house in Paris. Deputy Couri faced opposition as the crowd shouted support for the sisters. Police repulsed the mob, several injuries reported and many arrests made.
Secretary Root sent the proceedings in the court martial of Major Edwin F. Glenn and Lieutenant Norman E. Cook to the president. Glenn was found guilty of administering the water cure to natives and received one month’s suspension and a $60 fine. Cook was acquitted of ordering the killing of three Filipino prisoners. Root recommended approving the sentence and findings with no further action.
The Grande Ronde Lumber Company held its annual stockholders meeting at Perry Monday afternoon. Officers elected were J. Stanley as president W. P. Bartlett as vice president R. Smith as manager and treasurer F. S. Stanley as secretary. The board of directors includes J. H. Johnson of Denver Mrs. R. Smith of Perry and H. B. Bartlett of La Grande.
