South Dakota cruiser set for launch at Union Iron Works
San Francisco July 10 arrangements have been made for the launching tomorrow evening of the cruiser South Dakota at Union Iron Works. The ship promises great speed and concentration of fire, displacing about 14,000 tons with twin screws and engines rated at 25,000 horsepower to push toward 24 knots. Her armament and armor place her among the fastest battleship equivalents of the era, destined to outrun pursuers and hammer foes with a heavy, precise battery.
