Wrecks hit three freight cars in two rail lines

In Baker City and surrounding lines two freight wrecks occurred in four days. A Sumpter Valley railway switch was opened causing a train to derail with minor damage. An Oregonian line wreck followed at 3 30 in the Baker City area injuring none and causing minor damage.

Madison July 17 Governor Lafollette was renominated by the Republican state convention on the first ballot receiving 790 votes to 266 for Whitehead five for Scofield and three for Froelich James Q Davidson named for lieutenant governor Friends of Senator Spooner say he will carry the fight into the assembly and districts as the Lafollette faction prepares for the laser vote next November.

Harriman Appointed New Pacific Mail President

Charles Tweed resigned the presidency of the Pacific Mail Steamship Line today and E H Harriman was elected to succeed him. Tweed asked to be relieved due to numerous other interests. Harriman heads the Harriman lines including the Oregon Short Line and related ventures.

Archbishop Feehan Buried in Grand Cathedral Funeral

Archbishop Feehan was laid to rest at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago with Cardinal Gibbons Archbishops Ireland Kaw Ryan and about 20 bishops attending. The solemn pontifical requiem was celebrated by Bishop Spalding. Archibishop Ryan preached the sermon as a police led funeral procession moved through the city. The remains were placed in a vault at Calvary and will later be buried in Mt Carmel cemetery.
