In Annapolis July 17 delegates from mine workers weigh a possible general strike of bituminous and anthracite sectors. Mitchell argues against a broad walkout, while districts confer on actions and relief funds gather. Indications show no immediate strike, tails of contracts and funding shape the debate.
Hundreds of jurists gathered in Chicago to open the twenty sixth annual Illinois State Bar Association meeting at the Auditorium. John F. Stevens of Peoria headlined the opening session as topics include practical reforms in law, constitutional revision, and professional morals standards for lawyers.
Reports from Cranberry growers in the Cape and Plymouth regions indicate a large crop this season. Many acres of new bogs are thriving and promise a bumper yield. The season starts late July and runs about six weeks, with berries destined mainly for western markets, which over recent years have proven the best buyers for the industry.
In Baker City and surrounding lines two freight wrecks occurred in four days. A Sumpter Valley railway switch was opened causing a train to derail with minor damage. An Oregonian line wreck followed at 3 30 in the Baker City area injuring none and causing minor damage.

Madison July 17 Governor Lafollette was renominated by the Republican state convention on the first ballot receiving 790 votes to 266 for Whitehead five for Scofield and three for Froelich James Q Davidson named for lieutenant governor Friends of Senator Spooner say he will carry the fight into the assembly and districts as the Lafollette faction prepares for the laser vote next November.
Charles Tweed resigned the presidency of the Pacific Mail Steamship Line today and E H Harriman was elected to succeed him. Tweed asked to be relieved due to numerous other interests. Harriman heads the Harriman lines including the Oregon Short Line and related ventures.
Salem officials specify the reward for the Merrill case will follow the offer wording for capture and return of the convicts dead or alive. Superintendent J D Lee adds he will pay generously for the return of the body, even if not captured as stated.
London telegram reports the king is greatly benefited by the change of air and is recovering rapidly. The Admiralty orders the fleet to assemble at Portsmouth early in August for the coronation ceremonies.
Bart Prowley arrived Wednesday evening seeking medical aid for a severe facial wound from a stallion kick three miles west of town. Dr. House treated him, suturing the gash with several stitches to close the wound.
The torpedo boat Whipple is sent from Sparrows Point Maryland for its preliminary trial. Viewers of her construction expect a complete success. The Whipple belongs to the destroyer class that includes the Paul Jones Lawrence and McDonough among others recently added to the fleet.
Hartford July 17 reports say Connecticut tobacco yields look poor this year due to excessive moisture last month. Growers admit the crop will not reach average. canvas-grown plants fare worse than field crops.
In Rome Georgia on July 17 the Seventh District Democratic convention unanimously renominated Congressman J W Maddox for another term.
Sheriff Cudihee and six deputies trap Tracy in a lonely shack at Sawyer Lake eight miles from Black Diamond. Two accomplices are with Tracy who is badly wounded in the hip. A stool pigeon with access to the house reports the shark is completely surrounded and a killing seems likely.
After 60 minutes the jury found against plaintiff in the Banister versus Umatilla County damages suit. The action, tied to injuries from an embankment runoff near Helix last winter, was heard in a district court special session.
Archbishop Feehan was laid to rest at Holy Name Cathedral in Chicago with Cardinal Gibbons Archbishops Ireland Kaw Ryan and about 20 bishops attending. The solemn pontifical requiem was celebrated by Bishop Spalding. Archibishop Ryan preached the sermon as a police led funeral procession moved through the city. The remains were placed in a vault at Calvary and will later be buried in Mt Carmel cemetery.

Salt Lake City Utah July 17 all business in Park City is suspended after funerals for Daly West mine disaster victims. Officials say 34 were killed and 40 bodies have been recovered as recovery work resumes this morning.
New York market reports show wheat opening at 76 percent and rising slightly to 77 percent through the day. Liverpool closes lower at 1 1 2 percent, with Coun up small, ending around 644 percent. Wheat futures in San Francisco and Chicago cited at 514 and 74 percent respectively. Stocks stay steady including St Paul 183 1 2, Steel 404, Union Pacific 7 percent.
