Four Pendleton cowboys named Bilks Bill Swhtaler Jess McConnell Bill Hanscom and Ross wymer rescued a demented man from a slough along the Columbia River near Hood River. The would be suicide victim, a printer and former Pendleton worker, slashed his wrist and bled heavily before rescuers pulled him from the water and got him to Hood River hospital. The man’s first request after rescue was for a sandwich.
