King Taken to Portsmouth After Morning Departure

General Wheaton Retires After 41 Years of Service

Washington July 15 Major General Wheaton retires at age 64 after 41 years in the U S Army. He began as a private in 1861 serving in the Civil War on the Eighth Illinois, later Indian frontier, Spanish American War and in the Philippines where he led the north Philippines department and proposed zones of protection. He is praised for gallant service and departs for Chicago to make his home. Brigadier General John C Bates to succeed him, later brigadier in 1901 and noted for actions in the Philippines and Jolo.

Seattle July 15 The search for Tracy intensifies as Merrill's body is found near Chehalis confirming Tracy's killing of his companion.
