Receipts were light at North Portland stockyards with only three cars arriving. Hog prices showed a steady to strong tone with top quotes around 417.90 for extra fancy hogs. Cattle and sheep markets also displayed strength with limited arrivals and high end bids, while Chicago corn and hog futures moved on rust news and easing tensions.
Corn prices eased as traders shifted attention to the potential 21,000,000 bushel drop in spring wheat yields from a July forecast. Oats and hogs followed a softer trend as arrivals outlook and provisions weakened on lower market quotes.
On July 14 the New York stock exchange showed continued price instability with small, contracting dealings and five to twenty point swings in speculative notes. Total sales reached 9.15 billion par value with call money at 8 percent as freight blockades and fuel shortages limited relief for steel and related manufacturers. Belgians and Swiss government bonds reached new highs amid irregular Liberty moves.
