Amid widespread forest fires in northern Ontario and Michigan, authorities estimate over 800 fires, 20,000 homeless, and numerous deaths from heat and exhaustion. Reported losses include many foreign workers. Porcupine area records 41 lake drownings and multiple mine casualties as crews recover bodies and ship coffins.
Los Angeles July 14 The McNamara brothers John J. and James B. face murder charges tied to the Times building blast. Judge Bordwell calendars the trial for October 20 after arguments over timing and testimony, with prosecutors aiming for earlier dates and defense seeking December 1 to allow more testimony, the court split the difference.
A suspect believed to be Swan Peterson, last seen working near Rainier, was found at Yelm and is being brought to Rainier for identification. Authorities say Peterson slept separately from others, with bloodstained bedclothes found, and he had washed clothes Tuesday. Investigators think the Rainier axe murders may involve the same man.

The minister of justice reported the sentence may be commuted to a term in prison with possible parole. More than a million American women had pleaded against capital punishment for women.

See appeals for new trial while authorities pursue related cases. Bonds set at $5,000.

The House Expenditures Committee will probe attempts to oust him as Democrats and Progressives defend his record and question who seeks his removal and why. A New York bakery offered him double pay to run their bread division, while Wiley maintains a defiant stance against adulteration efforts.
W G Grant of New York maps a coast to coast race using relayed coaching horses. Fifty thousand dollars has been subscribed by a wealthy eastern horse fan. The route starts in New York City and ends in San Francisco with potential extension to Portland and Seattle if the team arrives in good condition. Grant plans to use 100 horses in relays of 20 miles each, with rest and shipment between legs.
