Serious rioting between Orangemen and Nationalists marked the 223rd anniversary of the Battle of Boyne in Belfast. The two-hour melee ended only after police charged the mobs repeatedly. Many injured as Nationalists tried to disrupt the Orangemen parade, with clubs and rocks used by both sides before order was restored.
Walla Walla July 12 Secretary of War Garrison will visit the city during the Northwest inspection tour in early August. The visit results from long efforts by the Commercial club and Fort Walla Walla committees and aims at possibly recommending re garrisoning the post. Exact date not stated in private dispatches.
Boillot drove a Peugeot to win the Grand Prix at Amiens, finishing the 568 mile race in seven hours, sixty two minutes and sixty seconds. Goux also drove a Peugeot to take second place. Twenty starters competed. In New York, State Supreme Justice Goff denied Lieutenant Becker a new trial after his death sentence.
Frank M. Griffith a prominent automobile owner died from hydrophobia in Portland Oregon after two days of agony following a dog bite five weeks earlier.
Washington July 12 The house probe of lobby charges began today with Chairman Garrett preparing to delve into Mulhall's narrative. He denied friction with the senate committee and said the house recognizes the Senate's prior rights to Mulhall's testimony. The house lobby committee adjourned without accomplishment and will resume this afternoon.
The three Wier brothers of Monument Montana experts with the lariat will compete for prizes at the Round-up this fall. Director Moorhouse says they have no peers in looping horns and dropping steers. Other entrants include Scout Marsh Skeeter Bill Robbins L W Minor and Ed Gibson. Cheyenne guests plan to attend with a carload of roping horses though the rodeo will supply bucking stock.
Glenn Martin and passenger Charles Day escaped a carburetor valve failure while cruising from Chicago to Detroit. At about 70 feet over Lake Michigan they descended to a safe landing two and a half miles from shore. They restarted the engine and reached shore under their own power, with Martin asserting the hydroplane was undamaged and ready to resume toward Charlevoix.
In Pentwater Michigan on July 12 Roy Francis and Beckwith Havens led the Chicago Detroit air boat reliability race and planned a noon ascent toward Mackinac Island. Glenn Martin stayed overnight at Muskegon, Indiana to pursue them while Walter Johnson remained at Robertsdale.
New York July 12 A committee of 1000 conductors and Brotherhood Railway Trainmen prepared to ratify a strike vote by about 100000 members on 42 eastern lines. A strike order may be issued soon with talks at the White House on Monday to discuss amendments to the Erdman arbitration act. Senate panel late today failed to decide on ordering a strike.
The governor of Washington appointed five women to the first minimum wage commission under the new law. Dr Theresa McMahon of the University of Washington, Mrs Jackson Silbaugh of Seattle, Mrs Florence H Swanson of Raymond, Mrs M J Laumer of Spokane, and Mrs Clarence Parker of Tacoma will investigate labor conditions and wages for working girls. Members will not receive pay.
Official dispatches claim a crushing defeat of Bulgarians at Seres by combined Greek and Servian forces. Greeks occupy Seres and Bulgaria is believed to seek immediate peace.
A public school bulletin in Mexico City posts a call for all students to meet the train bringing the new Japanese minister. It requests carrying Japanese flags and frames the act as a public testimonial of sympathy amid the nations' strained relation with imperialistic powers.
Supreme Court Justice Daniel C. Colhan was exonerated from misconduct charges filed by the Bar Association of New York. London July 12 Kitty Marion, who hurled suffragette literature into a Home Office window, was arraigned in court and refused to pay a fine. She was sent to Holloway jail and at led away shouted she would hunger strike and refuse to be released.
