Santa Monica July 10 The Apperson car driven by H Hanahwue won the long auto race covering 262.008 miles in 1 77 46 1 56. A Chadwick car placed second and q Stoddard Dayton third with an average speed of 64 2 10 mph.
A deadly start to the Santa Monica race meet leaves three injured. Pasadena chauffeur William Hornsby dies after being struck by an automobile crank. Dr Sy Van Meter, racing to his garage, crashes into a repair pit and may die. William Cram, rushing to the event, crashes, is pinned under a car, and suffers a fractured skull with slim hopes of recovery.
Santa Monica July 10 crowds thronged the grand stand as sixteen racing cars started an eight mile course. Driver Slefert in a Standard-Dayton skidded off the track on the first lap. Shannon in a Haynes car also failed the turn and leaped the embankment. Siefert lost an hour and Shannon two minutes. Lozier led early but dropped back by the eighth lap. About sixty thousand spectators watched, some camping out all night.
Tacoma reports that several house leaders urge electing FE Cushman, recently appointed to an Alaska judgeship, to replace his brother Frank Cushman in Congress. He would begin amid a ready coalition of supporters. The Cushman funeral is Tuesday with public services at 1 30 p m in the armory.
Chicago July 10 reported several heat prostrations this afternoon with no deaths. Temperature reached 80 degrees at noon as excursion boats ferried people to Lake Michigan amid the heat.

In Seattle July 10 James Fife killed his wife Mrs Elimabery T Fife after a quarrel sparked by her drinking with a stranger in a scenic bar. Fife was arrested and held pending investigation after witnesses say he kicked and then reported his wife dead at their Olympic apartment building.
S Hoffman a saw mill man was murdered at noon on One Prairie 17 miles northeast of Spokane. A Greek named A Kaa is suspected after Hoff man's gun and tuzor were taken. Hoffman was found dead in the woods after being shot in the head. A lynching bee organized at Mead with the sheriff s posse leaving Spokane in autos to pursue the suspect.
At St Paul on July 1 the Christian Endeavor convention renewed talks on methods across activities. Vandermartin led Christian Endeavor method discussions while Moore and Bishop Fallowser spoke on missions and healing. Junior and prison workers conferences were led by Shields and Sprout, with Rev Francis guiding Bible study. Over 25 denominational rallies occurred in as many churches alongside noon evangelistic services.
Union Oregon July 10 recall action a main meeting invoked against the mayor and council after a petition for resignation was ignored two months ago. Nominations were made to fill vacancies. Perry creek and Floyd River run torrents while the Missouri rises. streetcars halted, gas mains broken, and a Barnum and Bailey circus train stranded ten miles out. Rescue workers battle drifting debris as whistles save many lives.
San Francisco July 10 Inquest into the death of Mrs Lorena Da La Montanya reveals the German revolver used in the fatal shot accidentally discharged by Police Sergeant Arthur D Layne. A bullet pierced the ceiling as the weapon was examined. Mrs W H Patton a witness at the Montanya apartments July 2 claims the victim pressed the trigger while examining the gun. Also present were R G Hanford a wealthy mining man and Charles Whitte more a Los Angeles railroad magnate.
A violent electrical storm with heavy rainfall swept Colfax and Whitman county. Hundreds of acres of wheat were beaten down while damage totals are not yet estimated. Government gauge shows .6 inch precipitation and the storm began around seven o clock, tapering off near midnight.
Grand Junction Colorado reports a rumor that the Twin City Elks special train collided head on with a freight near Cisco Utah. No injuries confirmed and railroad officials deny the rumor. One report claims fifteen killed with three trainmen missing as wires are down.
Washington officials announce restoration of five thousand acres of land that had been withdrawn from entry in relation to the Yakima project. The land withdrawal was reversed and the area is now available again for entry and development.
Emperor Nicholas left St. Petersburg to attend the Poltava bi-centennial celebration marking the 1709 battle where Peter the Great's Russian forces defeated Charles XII's Swedes.

Copenhagen July 10. Herr Elenhammer unveiled his flying air pressure boat before naval authorities. Propelled by compressed air the craft rises from the water at full speed, skims the surface and clears, passing over obstacles including land. A motor boat several tons in burden was used. demonstration was successful and stirred observers. Count Frederick Moltke assisted.
San Francisco July 10 At a St Francis hotel meeting Tex Hall Ely Nevada Stanley Ketchel and Willis Britt signed articles for a finish fight to be held at Ely on Labor Day between Ketchel and Sam Langford The articles will be sent to Langford for his signature Willis Britt says $26000 is on deposit in an Ely bank as Ketchel share of the purse win lose or draw $25000 to Ketchel Langford to receive $5000
Kalama Washington July 10 Hon James Burke received today a check for 372387 from the state treasurer the amount due for services rendered in the Indian war of 7856 6 Taking his own horse saddle and bridle Burke went into the War at the beginning and served to the end 108 days He was entitled to 616 but the state charged him for his own saddle and bridle making the difference between the draft and the claim Burke has served as representative and county commissioner After waiting over half a century a few other veterans are receiving pay.
San Francisco July 10 William Wakefield and Thomas Crow pleaded guilty to possessing tools to manufacture counterfeit money and were sentenced by United States District Judge Van Vleet to ten and seven years in the penitentiary respectively. Wakefield received the longer term for the count involving the tooling.
GARLAG received ten years at San Quentin the maximum penalty while Crow drew seven years at Folsom prison. They were arrested in Marysville months ago after treasury department secret police traced to them a number of spurious coins.
Tacoma lawyers Gaynor Teats Herbert DeWolfe and A H Denman may face disbarment proceedings following testimony before an investigating committee. The State Bar Association, meeting in Aberdeen on July 29, is expected to call for conclusive proof of charges stemming from their criticisms of the Supreme Court.

Fairview Oregon July 10 Paul Du day lost his horse and buggy after driving into Columbia Slough on the Graham Luscher ranch to wash the buggy. The mare tangled in washed-in barbed wire, dragged into a deep hole and bled to death after being extricated. The buggy sank and was not recovered. Neighbors rendered prompt aid to prevent drowning.
Judge James W. Witten, head of the land drawing, moves to prep the registration for the Flathead Coeur d'Alene and Spokane reservations. Registration runs July 15 to August 5, with an estimated 50 000 to 100 000 applications per reservation. The unprecedented opening may bring up to 100 000 people to Spokane.
Sacramento reports ReD Ward Payson Weston, known as Weston, is expected tonight between six and. he reached Colfax last night, 54 miles from Sacramento. He left that city at an early hour this morning and logged 40 miles yesterday and 66 miles the day before, as he continues his cross country trek from New York to San Francisco.
