A feared volcano erupts anew sending earthquake shocks across the entire Alaska region. Residents report tremors felt throughout communities as authorities assess the seismic activity and potential ash dispersion affecting air travel and safety.
Volcanic disturbances feared as Mount Katmai continues smoking and ash is thrown. Earthquakes Saturday night and Sunday were felt across Alaska, with wireless links to Kodiak Karluk Bristol Bay and westward stations failing. Bristol Bay reports light ash and southwest winds.
In Conisboro England July 9 a gas explosion at Cadeby colliery trapped miners and ignited lower workings. Ninety one miners were believed killed as four more explosions halted rescue work. seven bodies recovered by noon and rescuers were injured. King George and Queen Mary had toured mining regions recently. An optimistic quip closed the report.
