A centered town fight in Tone Oregon left eight wounded after Charles Earhart, once a hotel clerk for Mrs Mary Ganger, clashed with Clark and other citizens. Earhart allegedly attacked Clark, who fired back, sparking a chaotic gun battle that spread through the community.
Frank Parmier, son of a Centralia farmer, is in Tacoma county hospital with a bullet in his right foot under guard. During a Roy celebration he was burgling a hotel when Mrs Miury Smith and Nettle Nixon seized him until he fought free with chair and rock. He fled to woods and was chased by 400 men across prairie before surrendering.
Guerneville Cal July 7 After a heroic attempt to save the life of an aged woman Mrs Mercer whom he believed to be penned in the burning home Albert N Kellogg aged 20 of San Francisco was at the point of death from terrible burns about the head face and shoulders Mrs Mercer escaped through the rear door but Kellogg thought she was still in the building and dashed into the empire and soon fell from the window to the ground unconscious.
A strong earthquake struck a large area along the French Mediterranean coast this afternoon. The tremor lasted several seconds but caused no deaths. A heavy rainstorm accompanied the event, and relief efforts were not yet reported.
Interstate Commerce Commission hearings began July 7 with Chairman Knapp presiding over the Meeker case. Testimony addressed rates on anthracite coal from the Lehigh district to tidewater and the recom of the commission.
The eighth International Epworth League convention begins in Seattle at 2 PM in the armory with about 10,000 motherlists in attendance. The gathering will run for six days and feature sessions and activities led by league leaders and members.
In Plattsburg New York special services were held at the Catholic summer school in honor of President Taft who addressed the students after a welcome by Governor Hughen. Taft arrived to join the Champlain tercentenary celebration with Senator Root and Ambassador Jusserand speaking. New York national guardsmen are encamped at the Platteburg reservation and Taft will attend a reception with other dignitaries tonight.
July 7 Hellingham reports the selection of a Cushman successor will be left to the legislature and no writ will be issued now. If the legislature does not act the governor plans to call a November election. He believes the people are tired of elections and wants one only if necessary.
Seattle July 7 Joel Shoemaker chairman calls for a convention of the Washington state conservation commission to be held at the exposition from August 26 to 28.
Lake Niawosh July 7 Colonel Roosevelt and Gon Carrier cornered a charging lion as it moved toward Kin. Roosevelt shot the beast to save his life, narrowly escaping a dangerous encounter. He and Kermit have claimed five lions four rhinoceros and other antelope for the Smithsonian Institute collection.
Colfax July 7 Bold attempt to wreck the Inland road passenger train to Spokane at Hirpole tunnel. would be wreckers looped a heavy chain around the outer rail on a sharp curve. A freight train led by a heavy electric motor broke the chain and derailed the caboose with minor damage. Detectives have found no trace of the would-be wreckers.
Flood waters from the Grand river and Big creek swamped Pattensburg and Pattonsburg in Missouri, leaving at least eleven dead and many missing. Fires burned two houses near Pattensburg, relief teams reached four miles from Pattonsburg, residents huddled on trees awaiting rescue, and towns became isolated islands with hunger and ruined crops intensifying the disaster.
In Seattle in July the American Good Roads congress endorsed testing a new road material from Nottingham England. FE Parnell Wooley described a sticky sing from iron foundries that costs half a pound per year to lay and promises dust and slipper resistance. The discovery is featured in today’s session as the congress closes tonight.
Burns Oregon July 7 delegates at the development congress sessions voiced unanimous support for building railroads across Oregon to connect to California and boost agricultural development. They urged backing the American plan as the sole path to rapid growth without rail links the region risks stagnation.

William S. Kine who escaped from the Oregon penitentiary February 11 1899 while serving a five year statutory term from Baker County was arrested in Montana. A requisition on the governor of Montana for Kines return was issued by Governor Benson.
San Francisco July 1 Johnny Bowen landowner tied to timber land frauds in northern California was ordered to serve one year in Alameda county jail. Circuit Judge Van Fleet imposed the sentence after Bowen’s conviction for defrauding the government of timber land value. Bowen had evaded arrest for three years by flight and was granted a stay of execution thirty days ago pending a writ of review, which had not been filed when today’s judgment was enforced. He also faces a fine of 1000.
Tacoma July 7. The Carsten Packing company barns were completely destroyed by a fire that started at 2 a.m. The boarding house was damaged and the entire plant threatened. Estimated loss stands at $10,000.
Whitman and neighboring counties expect a crop not less than 20 million bushels, with Whitman County alone forecast at 12.6 million. Dealers anticipate high prices through 1999, as buyers contract thousands of bushels at 80 cents, while farmers seek a dollar per bushel. Longtime residents hail the prospect, noting potential yields of 60 bushels per acre for winter wheat and strong outputs for oats, with high per-acre yields promised across fields.
Chicago officials announced at the start of the tax revision today that the city’s rent and personal property valuations for the year will rise by more than 122 million dollars. The revision aims to raise municipal revenues as property assessments increase across neighborhoods.

The Holdman Telephone Company, capitalized at 4000, is organized to build and operate a telephone line to Holdman and connect a wide county area previously lacking service. Trustees are J A Cresswell, Robert A Kissinger, Fred L McCrea, Dr Guerin, Henry Milla, with Kissinger as president and Mills as vice president. Main line will run 20 miles from Pendleton to Holdman, plus sideline extensions funded by patrons to expand access.
Four school trustees in Lorane vote to establish a union high school in the district, aiming to consolidate local education and better serve students in the area.
Berlin July 7 Prince Zao Von Eulenberg collapsed while listening to a witness in his perjury trial. He was carried to his castle at Lienburg in a critical condition as the trial adjourned. Indicted on two charges perjury and inciting perjury, the case stems from a charge against Editor Hardin alleging orgies of the Knights of the German Round Table. The prince, 43, is described as very feeble.
Spokane July 7 The legislative Investigating committee will begin probing state institutions at week’s end while awaiting a special session. Deputy attorney George A Lee said the chairman ordered a meeting in Seattle and directed visits to the west side institutions first, including the state university soldiers home reformatory and Port Orchard veterans home.
Salem on July 7 reports heavy rains damaged many cherries yet sunny weather promises a successful cherry show opening tomorrow with a four parade and plans for an annual event thereafter.

Vancouver Washington Judge W W MacCredie defies wearing a court gown, saying the state must buy it or he will skip court attire at the September jury session. James Hunter Wright, 50, surrendered in Spokane after admitting to burning art stores from Quebec to Spokane to collect insurance. He claimed an Episcopal clergyman uncle in Massachusetts influenced him, and that debt drove the fires from New York to Rhode Island Quebec Spokane. He said he alone was responsible for all losses.

In Spokane July 7 a blooded dog named Nobby owned by Dr. William Morse leaped from a second story window of the Granite building and died from the impact. The dog, a direct trial descendant of Nobsen Ik, had won prizes at the beach show during the interstate fair last year. The cause is unknown but fear of fireworks is suspected.
The American Land and Livestock company of Harney County has sold 11 440 acres to Chicago capitalists who plan to market it in small tracts to settlers. The southern Harney County land near the Nevada line offers water irrigation artesian wells and Trout Creek Valley as a prime grain fruit and alfalfa region. This marks the first large stock company divesting its holdings, with more to come as cattle-raising profits decline.
