In Salisbury England on July 6 Captain E B Lorraine and Sergeant Major Wilson of the British army were killed instantly when their Nieuport monoplane toppled after a side plane warped. The incident raised the air death toll for the week to twelve.
Pendleton visitors hail Walla Walla Fourth as a brilliant parade with lengthy pageant. First division floats depict Taft Roosevelt Wilson Bryan by Kauffman Jackson Hammond Gregg. Fraternal orders prominent Elks in purple and white. Chinese section closes with a silver wagon carried by thirty Celestials.
In Tacoma on July 5 Bob Evans, driving a Flanders, won the 100 mile race in 1 hour 35 minutes at an average speed of 63 mph. Mulford, in a Mercer, won the 150 mile race in 2 hours 13 minutes at an average speed of 61 mph.
Lincoln Neb July 6 Bryan returning home from Baltimore today was met at the railroad station by a band and about a thousand neighbors. An automobile ride to the business section brought him to a crowd filling the street from curb to curb. He spoke on the Baltimore convention predicting Wilson’s November election and praised the party for progressive democratic principles.
Panama July 6 United States legation orders a drastic probe into the July fight last night between Panama police and Marines aided by the Tenth Infantry Civilian and military casualties include one killed and several wounded with details to follow.
In St Louis on July 5 a near race riot followed a sarcastic jab at Jim Flynn. A patrolman fatally or near fatally shot a black participant, with others slashed or injured during a free for all tied to an argument over a Las Vegas fight. George Mitchell fired at officers and was shot.
Three people died and many suffered heat prostrations in Chicago today. Officials report a heat wave claiming multiple lives and prompting warnings to residents to seek shade and hydration.
Sergeant John Proctor of Fort Worden shot his divorced wife Ada Proctor and her children Nellie and Everett in room No 6 at the Cosmopolitan hotel in Walla Walla. After four shots from a Savage automatic revolver he killed himself in room No 2, dying about an hour later. Police note rumors of insanity following a Christmas divorce. no witnesses to the critical moments.
Pendleton Elks will ride as a separate division in Portland’s big Elks parade on Thursday July 11 under division commander George Strand. Secretary Thomas FitzGeraldi reports the local lodge will have its own officials and aides and a prominent parade role. The Pendleton contingent features Migs McMonies leading a Shetland pony bearing a lodge banner, with the 25 piece Round-up band, 25 reservation Indians in regalia, three stage coaches drawn by four horses, a duck wagon and a 100 plus mounted cowboys escort from the lodge.
New York July 6 J J Hill resigned today as vice president of the Great Northern Railway and W E Clough was announced as his successor.
Fire last night almost destroyed furniture dealer W R Graham's 711 Willow street home. The barn and nearby structures were saved after volunteers battled a fast spreading blaze. Loss estimated near $5000, largely insured. Graham woke to attic flames while heating water. most contents burned, he saved dining room items and prized china. Building, built over a century ago by B Selling, suffered extensive damage. Insurance held on furniture and house, with intent to rebuild once debris cleared.
Washington July 6 Chief Inspector Belknap of the interstate commerce commission left here with two other government experts to determine blame for the Corning New York railroad disaster. The inspectors seek to find if any violation of safety appliances laws caused the wreck and will place responsibility on the Lackawanna railroad.
President Taft rose early and joined John Hays Hammond for an 18 hole golf contest at Beverly links. He had a morning meeting with his stenographer before heading to the Myopa club. Secretary Hilles will not accompany the president on this Beverly trip.
Senator Bourne said Woodrow Wilson is the strongest nominee the Democratic Party could name and that the choice had been predicted 17 months earlier. He also called Taft the weakest Republican nominee and declined to discuss a third party or any specific Progressive or independent Senate bid.
Washington July 5 Congress will not authorize a probe of the Andrew McVeagh imbroglio unless specific charges against the cabinet officer are preferred. Chairman Cox said no inquiry into personal differences and only maladministration charges will trigger an investigation. Taft plans his own inquiry by summoning treasury chiefs at the next cabinet meeting and requiring every employee to pledge loyalty to McVeagh or retire.
Three armed masked robbers entered the Southern Incorporated poker club in San Francisco early today and robbed the keepers and guests of 300 dollars. No trace of the thieves has been found.
Salem Oregon July 5 The secretary of state will have all 43 initiative petitions checked by evening with 10 checkers at work. Over half are already reviewed and no defects seen that would warrant rejection. It’s a saying about milk not a crying shame.
Governor West predicts Wilson will carry Oregon this fall regardless of Roosevelt. He praises Wilson’s nomination and the Democratic convention in Baltimore. West recalls Wilson’s strong Portland endorsement and his own admiration of Bryan and the need to avoid party bitterness.
Governor Wilson at Seagirt says he has not decided on the Democratic National Committee chair but will consider all arguments and announce the choice in Chicago on July 15. Delegates from Baltimore pressed for a seasoned campaign manager while names like McCoombs and Lynch are mentioned.
In Woodside near Oyster Bay a boy threw a stone at Colonel Roosevelt’s car as he and Mrs. Roosevelt traveled by. The stone struck Mrs. Roosevelt but caused no injury. The Colonel stopped the car and searched the barefoot crowd, but could not identify the culprit and the boy escaped punishment.
Governor West dropped into Pendleton unannounced to inspect the Eastern Oregon Hospital under construction and discuss plans to house up to 50 farm fruit harvest workers from the asylum. He toured the grounds, eyed driveways, and considered a new road layout and a steel bridge with county cooperation.
Two men, Fred Beck and B. Reed, were arrested by officers at Cayuse during an Indian celebration. They are jailed and to be sent to Portland for a federal charge of taking liquor on a reservation. The event drew attendees and will run through Sunday, July 14, with heightened security.
In Chicago WL July a dispute over the newspaper strike ended with former employee and bartender John Moran wounded fatally. Police report say John Goult a strike breaker shot Moran twice during the confrontation sparked by the strike dispute.
