Investigation Ordered of Faulty Pavement
BaIem July 1 Immediate investigation of the paving along the Bale m Aurora stretch of the Pacific highway was ordered by the state highway officials. Four further inquiries were set for the work of the inspection division on the highway project. A farmer near Gervais sparked the action, prompting an engineering review. The Blake Compton company of McMinnville supplied the five inch hard surface pavement claimed to be non patent. Tests show the pavement varies from 3 to 4 1/2 inches and is not mixed as specified. Blake Compton bid $153,512 for the job. Until the investigation and report are finished, the June estimates are held and the contractor will not be paid for past work. All road work is halted pending inquiry. This road is a Pest road with the federal government paying half the cost and the state the rest. Officials say the mixing machine used by the contractors is defective and fails to deliver proper material proportions. This is the only contract the Blake Compton company holds for the state.
