Bitter cold grips the region as search crews probe avalanches near Mead. Maurice Jasmussen and Benjamin Crete are named as the missing and presumed dead after three slides hit Mountalin area, severing power lines and triggering a deadly mountain wave.
A wartime dispatch from Hill 304 1S describes heavy artillery duels and French advances against German positions as five German aircraft are said destroyed. Paris notes indicate Germans attempting to gauge French preparations on the Meuse west bank, with large forces engaged and Belgian forces mentioned. In Berlin a January report claims repeated French assaults on Hill 204 and Combrea Heights with captures southwest of Dixmude and failed British offensives south of La Bume.
A survey party of fifteen led by Engineer Bennett works east of Pendleton toward the eastern line of Umatilla County. The crew advances from Pendleton to Feho moving camp soon, with detailed surveys to follow from Kite to The Dalton as they map a proposed federal highway route funded jointly with state money.

The P. H. and girls basketball teams traveled to Walteburg where the girls fought a close contest on their home floor and dropped 20 to 17. The boys game was one sided, Walteburg winning 69 to 7, with P. W. and boys showing grit despite the score.
Nogales dispatches report ongoing fighting near Nogales between US troops and Mexicans. Utah cavalry reinforcements were ordered, and an investigation by the commanding officer has begun. No word received yet on casualties or outcome.
ARIVACA Ariz Jan 27 no word from Blone bol the scene of a skirmish between cowboys Utah cavalry and Mexican forces. A small detachment of troops is en route from Theson. The Nogales country is held in Tendinens. IVAREZ Jan 27 the Carranza commander at Casas Grandes says Pershing HQ at Colonia Dublan evacuated at daybreak. Troops march northward their next base toward OJ Pederico.
Washington January 27 The National Security League praised universal military service for all male citizens though excluding those under eighteen. The group urged enactment of a broad draft with the aim of strengthening national defense and civic duty across the country. The statement stressed readiness and unity in the face of growing international tensions.
Tomorrow and Monday June 25 and 26 are designated as Child Labor Days. Churches and teacher groups join Feundington ministers to discuss freeing 10 to 15 year olds from work. About 1,465,000 children in this age range work in factories and various industries instead of attending school or resting. The new federal law frees 50,000 of these children, with additional measures needed to free the rest.

The blaze ranks among the citys most disastrous fires in years.

In Windsor Ontario police captured James Stewart alias Gordon, accused slayer, after a struggle in the Barex hotel lobby. The Maryland and Mexican patrol boat exchange fire off San Ramon point in Lower California during a southbound approach.

Extrilprise Jan 27 report: Hi A Queensberry and Wallowa National Bank president Helmén sign an agreement with Mr Quewenberry and Mr Holmes to pay 1.60 per bushel for all merchantable wheat raised on 275 acres in 1917. The deal establishes the record price for contract wheat in Wallowa.
A bill in Salem proposes raising Umatilla county treasurer pay from 1200 to 1508 dollars annually. The measure bars a deputy when the treasurer earns 1200, saving the county about 400 dollars yearly.

The Pendleton group, armed with 44 caliber revolvers, caused extra ram warnings and ammo shortages before heading to the St Paul Franie hotel for offices and planned horse activities this afternoon.
James A Mendenhall of Echo, Oregon, died yesterday afternoon from complications of troubles. Born September 6 1859 in Lane County, he lived in Echo most of his life and farmed the meadows since early manhood. He is survived by his wife, a son and daughters Minnie Mendenhall Dorns Hammer and Alfred Mendenhall of La Grande and others. Funeral tomorrow morning at 10 at the Echo Methodist church.
