In Walla Walla on January 27 a man calling himself Reed was held by police for several hours while investigators probed his link to the Moore case. Moore, imitating ex-senator William P. Reser, cashed three checks at the saloon trade using a fake signature, with saloon men reporting a $30 for $20 loss and a $60 counterfeit fund. Reed claims no knowledge of the scheme. Moore was described as a small man in coveralls with a two week beard, posing as a laborer to blend into crowds.
Auburn Cal Jan 27 Two jurors were accepted in the Weber murder trial by noon F J Will a fruit grower of Cold Run and T W Berry a Sheridan farmer. Ten talemen were examined this morning eight excused for cause some for having formed an opinion others for opposition to capital punishment where the evidence is circumstantial The defendant shows marked interest as examinations proceed and a sickly smile crosses his face when a tailed man says he has an opinion.
Cavalry pursued fugitives after a desperate resistance. A Sunset Street wire fell on a worker near Madison Street causing electrocution. He died before aid arrived. Prince Estel Frederick ill in Berlin with high fever. The cruiser Maryland completed a trial voyage at Rockport.
Grain market notes from Miccngo dated January 27 show winter wheat opening at 68 percent and closing 94 percent, corn opening at 434 and closing unchanged, and cited prices for May Liverpool wheat, San Francisco can be wheat at 1.50 to 31.62, Portland Walla Walla bluestem and wheat prices listed, with Tacomm bluestem and bruh values noted.
Sheriff Paylor and Special Deputy Hilton escorted Dunn and Ditty to the state penitentiary at Bacot for five and three year terms. Dunn was convicted of robbing Beummelt, Ditty for horse larceny. The capture marked a crackdown on local crime in Umatilla County Jail. Dunn denied taking Beummett’s money, claiming it was a gambling dispute that led to Beummett’s bluff.
Sumpter June 27 William Maddern of Bourne was arraigned before Justice G E Allen on a murder charge after a fatal Friday night confrontation with William Littell at Bourne. Defense argued possible self defense or accidental shooting as the judge refused to let him testify fully. Angelo Perma and Joseph Matena were involved in a separate shooting with Austrian suspects unnamed.
