Grand jury releases final report criticizing county officers books and the jail system. It urges a better bookkeeping protection or exclusion system and advises improved Sunday observance law. The panel passes up certain evils to the city council for action.
Grand jury returns indictments against A. D. Rhonimus for second degree murder and Andrew Manning for horse theft. Lewis Graham faces concealed weapon charge while Mrs. Dollie Thompson is accused of obtaining money under false pretenses. Sam Endicott and Roy Stewart face no true bill on larceny charges.
The Pendleton grand jury reports after a week of sessions twelve true bills and one not true Will. It notes no full audit of county offices but recommends a bookkeeping system and annual record audits. It urges tighter sheriff’s office access to prevent jail breaks and supports a deputy district attorney. It also mentions pendency of city issues with insufficient evidence to act.

Judge G A Hartman sold his residence on Fast Water Street to Mrs E A Snyder in a transfer completed today. The Snyder family, currently six miles north of Pendleton in Fulton County, plan to move in next fall as their new home. price remains undisclosed.
Baker City high school enrolls 186 pupils, ten more than in its history, prompting the opening of the North Baker building to provide space. The Herald notes the high school and two annexes would not have sufficed for all students.
The overruled demurrer to indictments in the government rebate cases against the Omaha and Great Northern Wisconsin Central and Minnesota and St. Paul railroads sends the matter to trial at the April term. It is believed there will be no more dilatory tactics.
L. E. Tureman and his son George Tureman, prominent Burnt River rancher and freighter, appeared in Baker County circuit court as District Attorney Lomax read an indictment accusing them of obtaining money under false pretenses through padded road-work bills and graft against Baker County. Lew Tureman, a pioneer freighter and early operator between Umatilla Landing and Boise City, is described as a leading local figure.
A fire and blast at the Nixon building in Goldfield caused heavy damage in the basement. Police found the body of a Black man in the basement, mangled and burned. Authorities say the blast was caused by a Black suspect, but his motive remains undetermined.
Henry M Field aged 84 and last of the Field brothers Cyrus W David Dudley who connected the first Atlantic cable and Stephen J supreme court judge died this morning at Pittsfield Mass. The Field family legacy spans invention litigation and national service.
Dover New Hampshire January 26 fire at the Cocheco manufacturing plant destroys the building. Loss estimated at 500000 with 490 workers inside. Sixteen bodies found on the fourth floor and many more feared dead as flames trap staff and panic leads to trampling and scrambling for safety. Rev Harry Secor and Rev W H Gibson noted as returnees from Baptist meetings.
The February program at Fazer Theater offers high order comedy burlesque and music with Orchestral, vocal, and instrumental acts. The local talent sale features new additions like Driscoll and Johnson orchestras, Eagles band, glee club, and athletic numbers to benefit the Commercial association gym. Tickets are $1 lower floor and 60 cents gallery with advance sales through Pendleton Drug. J H Farley plans an Ontario ice plant, costing 15000 dollars, to be operational by April 1.
