Washington January 25 officials believe a single great spring offensive will test peace maneuvers. President Wilson reportedly expects one massive effort before any peace steps, with preliminary plans to be finished in six weeks. Diplomats say peace hinges on this colossal push as Entente nations await the outcome.
City board hears renewed opposition to Standard Oil’s franchise to build a fuel distribution plant at current site. Mayor Beat and residents urge delaying ordinance and seeking outside city limits while company seeks to start work. Company representative notes option on Frasier property and potential block purchase.
Beginning about February 1 the Weather Bureau Portland will resume reading apreal forecasts for stockmen. Forecasts will be telegraphed to the forest supervisor then to distribution centers at Pendleton Pilot Rock Heppner Arlington and Condon for urgent dissemination. Volunteer gentlemen listed include C W Hager LC Roharps G Smith and G B Robertson with no delivery charge to wear stockmen who accept them.
Washington paid tribute to Admiral George Dewey as his funeral procession moved through Pennsylvania Avenue. Officials from the president to minor clerks paused as the nation mourned the hero of Manila Bay, and government machinery halted to honor the United States Navy’s famed leader.

In Windsor Ont on January 24 a migrant inspector M B L Jackson of Winnipeg was killed by James Stewart the safe blower. Stewart allegedly took Jackson's pistol during a conversation and used it to shoot as Jackson fled to the smoking car en route to Windsor where authorities planned to arrest Stewart for the Battle Creek safe blow. The incident ends with Jackson permitting Stewart to seize control of the long ride in what police describe as a fatal confrontation.
Pais, Jun 25 Josephine Harihelemy, twenty, was acquitted of killing her own infant. She testified the child died over fear of a German father, claiming German soldiers attacked her and that the baby was unwelcome. The government revived the cradle outside the town hall for unwed mothers with guaranteed support.
TOKIO January 5 reports say the Japanese diet has dissolved and Count Teraychi's minister has been overthrown. Viscount Kato led opposition claiming Teraychi’s cabinet selection unconstitutional as the political crisis deepens. TORIO January 4 reports newspapers have not commented on President Wilson’s peace proposals.
A judge finds constitutional obstacles to the city making a library contract with any corporation. The decision leads to repeal of existing library ordinances and signals a shift in city policy.
Paris Jan 26 reports Lieutenant Gayniemer destroyed his twenty seventh German aeroplane, the second in two days. The French repulsed a German attack south of Beristac with heavy enemy losses.
Salvage contractors in EURPKA report the cruiser Milwaukee cannot be rebuilt. They estimate metal salvage at twenty dollars per ton and removal costs at a hundred dollars per ton, with total refloat and equipment costs around seven hundred thousand dollars and claims of a potential million dollars in contracted supplies.
Fire Chief Ringold reports Pendleton had 49 fires in 1010 with total damage at STK245, insurance 269,300 and property loss 460,350. Old frame buildings lost 14,200 as trash fires led causes. Alarms totaled 30 by system and 24 by phone. 4 fake alarms. Fire equipment valued at 16,547.80. 170 electrical permits issued. wiring cost estimated at 95,574.
In Chicago and Portland markets on January 26 a stronger tone persisted in wheat pit trading. Prices quoted included May FLEE and July contracts with figures around 1.54 to 1.60 dollars, and commodities like cenh and bluestem noted in Portland reports.
Two Germantown school teachers provided Philadelphia police with the name of Bernard W. Lewis, the suspect in the so called model murder. Detectives traced Lewis to Atlantic City where he took the life jacket in time to flee.
