Portland June 24 The well known steamer George W Elder struck Coffin Rock on the Columbia while bound for San Francisco late Saturday night. The vessel carried a car freight worth 50,000 and the steamer value at 160,000. About 1000 tons of the cargo and 600 tons of the ship will be saved, with significant damage reported.
Elmer BE Handy, a well known citizen of Marlon Michigan, is under arrest after fatally shooting his wife. Handy, formerly of Washington state, was involved in a domestic incident on January 24. He currently faces homicide accusations as police investigate the case.
Attorney Parker presented the defense in the Tucker murder trial while Zucker asserted innocence in a brief statement to the jury. Judge Sheldon delivered his charge to the jury at 12:30, and the jurors began their deliberations.
