Seattle voters rush to register for February 7 recall election. Mayor George Dilling faces challenger Dil ling as records show this is the heaviest registration in city history after four days of books open.
New York January 23 David Graham Phillips was shot five times by a well dressed man of distinguished appearance at the doorway of the Princess club and then killed himself with a final bullet. Phillips was carried to Bellevue Hospital in critical condition awaiting identification of the assailant.
The Wright Brothers training camp at Augusta Georgia will offer year round flying instruction for students. The aerodrome spans about 76 acres and Frank Coffin, a Wright flyer, has been placed in charge of the camp, expected to attract winter resort visitors.
Thomas Field of Sioux City is dead and five others survive serious injuries after a deadly fire at the Millard hotel in Omaha where about 200 guests were asleep. The blaze caused dramatic rescues and a loss estimated at ten thousand dollars.
In Wheeling on January 21 Judge Jordan sustained a state motion and barred two key witnesses who testified the Schenk family conspired against the defendant. After the ruling the state rested. arguments resume later. Officials seek Reverend George Way with warrants for his arrest for his alleged death prediction. he is said to have fled the state.
Denver Jan 23 The Democratic caucus to choose a replacement for the late Senator Hughes is not expected to select a candidate due to alleged lack of progressive leanings from Gov Speer and Denver Mayor Adams, the leading aspirants.
Five ex convicts appeared before Judge Phelps in circuit court this morning. McCarty received five years for larceny, Padilen three years for receiving stolen goods, Blake an indeterminate one to fourteen years for the same charge, Bowers three years but paroled on $250 cash bond, and Gillette pleaded guilty to obtaining money under false pretenses. Sheriff Taylor’s records aided guilty pleas, reducing trial costs. Kerwin awaits trial as arguments begin after a daylong session amid grand jury action concerning sodomy charges and related indictments.
San Francisco report states Herman Schmidt, famed as California’s fattest man at 475 pounds, died of heart disease today after running a saloon. A special coffin and ten pallbearers planned for the funeral.
In Newark New Jersey on January 23 Mrs. Carolina Martin was convicted of murdering her niece Ocey Snead by drowning in a bathtub. She was sentenced to seven years in the penitentiary. Relatives say she is sane and may be committed to an asylum.
Reports from El Paso and Presidio describe a bloody 24 hour engagement near Galena south of Casa Grandes. More than two hundred killed or wounded, including women and children, as federalists hold the town. Earlier reports say 100 federal troops were killed in a two day battle at Okinaga where General Durante’s forces retreated after an ambush.
Washington Jan 23 A national Republican Progressive League was announced by progressive Republican senators congressmen governors and others to fight for popular government. Officers elected include Senator Dourne Oregon president Congressman Norris Nebraska first vice president Governor Ostrom Michigan second vice president and Charles Jane Chicago treasurer. Executive committee members listed include Pinchet Omeresman Kent of California and Senators Pipp Minnesota Pristow Kansas Lenroot Wisconsin.
Sacramento January 27. The San Francisco exposition delegation at Washington urged aid but the house and legislature pledged that no material aid for the Panama exposition would be asked if San Francisco were chosen as the official site for the 1915 exposition. The resolution will be telegraphed to Washington.
San Francisco January 23 The state supreme court ordered a rehearing before the appellate court of Abraham Ruef s plea for a new trial after his 1907 conviction and 14 year San Quentin sentence. The indictment arose in the Molly Eager case and the appeal has lingered on since then, denied months ago by the state appellate court.
Springfield Alabama reports filed by the pellagra commission say corn and matze are the sources of pellagra. Experiments indicate the average life of a pellagra victim is about twenty years.
In Santa Barbara California on Jan 23 armed immigration officers hunted the hills south of the city and guarded passes into the San Joaquin valley seeking smugglers thought wounded yesterday in a pitched battle. Revenue cutters Bear and Orient patrolled offshore for the vessel that landed the men. Quan Vick, alleged ringleader of the smuggling gang, was captured.

Solebh Oregon Jan 25 reports the Senate moves toward free school books for all pupils, a measure curbing secret lodge rites, and bills totaling 194 introduced in the house this session. Other proposals include county clerk name registration, new bonds for Multnomah County treasurer, and a southerner Oregon experiment election.
Olympia January 23 Representative Rosenhaupt of Spokane introduced a bill to relieve all state judges after 18 years service and grant a life pension of one half salary. In a joint convention both houses held memorial services for Governors Cosgrove McGraw and Senate President Smith.
New York January 23 District Attorney Whitman announced medical experts declared Joseph Robin, accused of wrecking the Northern bank, insane and incurable. He will not be tried. Robin attempted suicide by poison at arraignment.
New York court hearing on Edna Gontrich divorce reveals no serious opposition. It is understood a trust fund of one million dollars and a wall is to be divided between Edna and her spouse.
Vienna reports that Servia Montenegro Bulgaria Rouman Greece align to curb Turkish advances in the Balkans. A Serbian government subsidy of eight million dollars backs guerrilla warfare along the frontier, with Serb bands operating alongside Montenegrins.
London reported eleven killed and several badly injured after a passenger train collided with a dining car near Hopkinsson Wales on the Taff railway today.
Danville Alabama January 23 grand jury began official probe into alleged wholesale vote buying in Vermillion county Cannon's bailiwick. Probers expect confessions and assert prominent business men and politicians are attempting to block the investigation. Hundreds of tankers and politicians including every candidate in recent years have been summoned.
Washington, D. C., Jan. 23 Senator Robert Mamble of South Dakota defended the majority report on Lorimer's election saying Lorimer was legally elected. He argued there was no evidence that Shepard, Clark, Lincke, Wilson or Browne were paid for votes and that the St Louis jackpot division was not related to the election.
London reports say several native Chinamen were killed after clashes with foreigners sparked by anti foreign attacks. In Pankew China on January 23 American sailors may join to quell violence. US Consul General Moser will seek a warship to protect interests if the threat resumes.

Imperial police in Tokyo conduct a vigorous search for Kotoku’s brother and sister, believed hiding there after his arrest. They reportedly fled to America, and authorities monitor the radical socialists to prevent further agitation.
Albany lawmakers approve with near unanimous votes in both houses to support San Francisco in contesting congressional claims for the Panama exposition relocation and funding.
Marshfield Missouri January 23 judge Skinner reads the charge as Walter Dipley and Goldie Smith await the jury verdict on first or second degree murder in the death of Stanley Ketchell.

In Tacoma on January 23, Mrs Hartina Kualshaug was acquitted in a third trial over her alleged complicity in her husband’s murder. Charles Newcomb was convicted and sentenced to death after a May 1909 shooting as he returned from a dance. The jury deliberated seven hours and freed Kualshaug, who was said to have received $20 from the jurors.
