In Thamesm suburb a pair of bandits seized pay envelopes from factory workers and shot a policeman. An unknown bystander grabbed the satchel and fled as the gunmen fired on a streetcar and passengers, then, cornered by police, killed themselves.
New York reports a near disaster when an unknown vessel collided with the White Star liner Republic 26 miles south of Nantucket. All 25 passengers are safe. The Baltic revenue cutter arrived to assist. The Nantucket ran aground and sank bow first. crew and seven passengers were rescued.
Olympia based report states Howard Cosgrove will be inaugurated governor Tuesday. Cosgrove the son traveled to Portland to meet his father en route. the ceremony may occur in the special car as Congreve arrives. Printing houses work overtime to have bills ready for the legislature reconvening.
Charles A. Coey, noted balloonist and head of the Federation of American Aero Clubs, wrote to the Seattle Aero Club in Beattle Washington that he may visit Seattle within a month to make several ascensions in his balloon Chicago to stimulate interest in the club.
Vancouver Washington January 23 A passenger train on the North Bank road plunged into a ditch at Grand Dalles early today. The engine baggage and mail cars left the track as a rain loosened roadbed and sank under the locomotive. Engineer McClain was badly scalded.
Oregon City report says Charles E B Weekly, about 26, paroled from Kansas State Industrial Reformatory at Hutchinson in June 1908, surrendered to Officer Tenry Cooke after breaking parole over disagreement with his stepfather. He offers to resume his term and stay with his people in Kansas.
Four men died and over twenty were saved after a massive snow avalanche at Camp Bird mine in Ouray Colorado on January 23. Forty horses were buried under tons of debris as rescue teams worked to reach survivors including Emil Johnson who was buried and later recovered.

Salem January 23 amendment to the school law proposes that union high school districts may be formed at any time by a mass meeting of taxpayers to vote on the question. If large enough these districts may elect directors and fix tuition rates.
Salem Jan 23 The Peale timber oruleng assessment bill passed the Oregon house with 44 aye votes and four abstentions. The measure requires timber landowners to furnish trader estimates for their holdings. The bill previously passed the house in the last session but was defeated in the senate.
Salem Ore Jan 23 A bill shifting civil process fees from constables to sheriffs in Malheur and Harney counties was passed by the house Representative Brooks of Malheur and Harney led the effort. The Harney sheriff earns 2000 dollars and the Malheur sheriff 2600 dollars but the travel to serve papers often runs up to 150 miles, justifying the fees.
Salem Oregon January 23 a bill introduced by Colonel Muriey of Coos and Curry would exempt mining corporations from all filing fees except one dollar for articles of incorporation but the measure was indefinitely postponed in the house yesterday The current law sets a minimum ten dollar filing fee rising with capital stock up to one hundred dollars for companies with capital stock of one million dollars or more

A bill in Salem proposes a state veterinarian with $2000 salary and $1500 travel, to prevent and eradicate cattle diseases. The official would supervise quarantines, authorize killing diseased stock on order, and levy fines up to 500 dollars for transfers or nonreporting. An annual $3500 maintenance appropriation follows two years of funding.
Salem Oregon January 2 Senator Coffey introduces a bill requiring streetcar companies to provide seats for motormen and allow them to sit at least half the time on runs. Violations incur fines of 50 to 100 dollars per offense and each day counts as a separate offense.
In Satom Oregon Representative Dimieck introduced a bill to add a lie penalty for highway robbery and assault with intent to kill or wound while armed with a dangerous weapon. The bill imposes a minimum ten year term with judicial discretion for clemency, while non armed robbery carries five to ten years. previous penalties ranged from three to fifteen years.
In Salem on January 23 a bill was introduced in the house by Representatives Bronks of Malheur and Harney counties to appropriate 13,000 dollars to help Malheur county construct an interstate bridge across the Snake River near Ontario. The county would bear the larger share of the cost and must proceed within one year to leverage the grant.

It was shown the Phiy family is in straitened circumstances and that the young children are suffering from hunger. The mother pleaded in court and stated her son had been struggling through the woods daily seeking gum for food.
Main Line Train No 2 was delayed at Troutdale yesterday due to slide repairs on the Walla Walla Branch. Repairs extend as far as Havana Port and cut off outside communication.
Spokane Washington January 24 floods have ceased to menace property in the area. Great Northern and Northern Pacific trains begin eastward runs and the O Ry N will start a train for Portland tonight.
Officials plan a Sunday departure from the city if the repair work continues to proceed as it has. Wm. Rollins, division engineer, expects trains to reach Walla Walla by Sunday, with repairs from this city to Adams nearing completion. Yesterday the crew finished work to Havana No 2 while a rock slide at Troutdale delayed No 8 and turned the Portland train back to Pendleton.
London reports Lady Paget sails for New York today after a long absence from America, accompanied by several friends. Her son Albert Paget, known as Bertie, is already en route to the United States with Lord Anglesey.

Oregon completed its building and installed exhibits five months before the Alaska Yukon Pacific Exposition opens. The state stored two cars of choice apples and a car of forest products, with the entire exhibit to be installed two months prior to gates. The building, near the central court with Lake Washington views, was finished in November and the Oregon commission has since assembled the display. Over the past three months more than 60,000 people have attended the exposition grounds.
A Ta Grande special reports a large irrigation meeting with about 500 farmers present. The proposed monster project aims to irrigate 20 000 acres in the valley and stimulate strong local interest. Details will be worked out tonight.
John Hall and Riley Preiver pleaded guilty in circuit court to robbing the Klamath County bank on January 18. Judge Noland sentenced Hall to one year and Preiver to five years in the penitentiary, with immediate removal. Hall, the older man, appeared to lead the plot.
