Jury Completes Davis Case On Tax Fund Embezzlement Charge
The jury in the Davis case closes with the charge that on July 12, 2006, while serving as deputy sheriff, he allegedly appropriated 4200 from tax money. The district attorney outlined the sheriff’s office accounting and that money received from taxes passed through deputies Punk and Fowler and was turned over daily to Davis or when possible. Evidence suggested Davis attended to banking and, with Sheriff Taylor, held the money drawer keys. The state contends irregularities occurred though the sheriff followed a predecessor’s method and about 1900 of county funds were used for expenses, offset by 1500 in state certificates and 411 in script. The embezzlement claim centers on funds paid from back taxes during 1906.
