Remarkable Voyage of a Sailing Vessel to Honolulu
The Erakine M. Phelps arrived at Honolulu from Norfolk Va in 97 days breaking all prior records for a north Atlantic port vessel. It circled Cape Horn from 60 south in the Atlantic to 60 south in the Pacific in 11 days. Most of the crew were hoboes posing as sailors, leaving the captain and mates to take wheel and aloft duties. A terrible squall near Cape Horn tested the crew as only six men came on deck while others lay below seasick or terrified. Still the Phelps set the record.
