A 69 car freight from Cajon to wild reaches Keen's Brook derailed after an engine jumped an embankment near Cal. Ten miles from the site Conductor W. Beck and another official were killed. Engineer and Trainman J. C. were seriously hurt.
In London on January 21 Colonel Lynch faced treason charges for acts during the Boer War. The crown is backed by six attorneys, Lynch by four. Lynch claims he is a naturalized Boer and not indictable. The courtroom was crowded as a motion to quash the indictment was denied and Lynch pleaded not guilty.
Ex mayor Abrams Hewitt funeral held with cavalry parade and large turnout. Bishops Potter and Letterbee and Rev Parks led ceremonies. Pallbearers included Mayor Low, Andrew Carnegie, J Pierpont Morgan, and Jessup. Interment at Peter Cooper burial lot Greenwood. From Maracaibo Venezuela January 21 reports say 120 shots were fired from the Fort of San Carlos during Saturday's engagement with the German cruiser Panther. The fort walls are slightly damaged and reports claim the Panther attempted to force the lake entrance to capture the Venezuelan gunboat Miranda. The Venezuelan government issued a statement supporting this claim.
General Nelson A. Miles and his party arrived in St Petersburg from Moscow after a two hour stay. He traveled by a special train under escort through Manchuria and said the trans-Siberian route opened vast future prospects for Russia. Miles will stay several days before proceeding to Berlin Paris and London.
Hartford Conn January 21 The jury in the Nellie Cropsey case returned a verdict of murder in the second degree. Wilcox is sentenced to 30 years imprisonment after the first trial ended with a death sentence.
Salem Jan 21 The capitol discussion says conventions are required to nominate a representative for the Tongue vacancy. Precedents from Gov Grover’s administration suggest both parties will hold new primaries following the deaths of Joseph G Wilson in 1874 and George A LaDow in 1875 who were elected but died before qualification.
Denver Jan 21 The Democratic Senate and House held a joint session and adjourned after one ballot without result. Teller received 46 votes in the session, reflecting a deadlock and ongoing political maneuvering in the legislature.
Harrisburg Jan 21 Senator Penrose was reelected by the Pennsylvania legislature to succeed himself in the United States Senate.
Albany January 21 Senator Platt was reelected to succeed himself today in a joint session of the assembly.

Prominent stockmen from all Iowa counties attended the opening of the Iowa Improved Stock Breeders' Association annual meeting in Newton on January 21. A two day program features papers and discussions on topics important to stock breeders. The report notes fifty people committed suicide in May, the highest May tally on record.
Atlantic City Jan 21 A hurricane on the coast wrecked the American ship Abbott ashore twenty miles east of here. Five crew members were found lashed to the wreckage three miles out to sea, one died before reaching shore, four missing, others in exposure and unconscious. Ship and cargo complete loss. unknown ship name.
Philadelphia January 21 The Temple Coal Company superintendent testified as the first witness before the anthracite commission this morning. He said he employed 164 men whose positions were filled by efficient miners. Counsel Darrow challenged him on a backnet. The company auditor testified that average daily wages were $1.60 per man.
Lieutenant Governor Tillman ends silence in Columbia declaring he will not resign. He asserts Gonzales was armed and warns a resignation would shadow his honor. Tillman mentions potential bail of 160.00, cites friends' protection, and recalls a past offer to resign after a face-to-face meeting with Gonzales.
