Washington January 20 The inaugural committee voted unanimously to eliminate the Inaugural ball requested by President elect Wilson. A public reception will replace the ball on March fourth likely in the rotunda of the Capitol.
Stockholm January 20 Swedish ambulance surgeons and nurses returning from Servia say Austrian authorities mistreated them at the Serlin frontier. They were forbidden to wear armilets in violation of International law. Throughout Austria they observed trains and troops deployed.
Boston January 20 unionized mechanics and shopmen of the New York New Haven and Hartford railroad accepted a seven percent increase to avert a strike. They sought further improvements in working conditions and hours.
London January 20 Thirteen million British women face a division in the House of Commons over a government franchise measure with a woman suffrage clause. Cabinet split 205 for, 220 against, 150 in doubt. A two day debate precedes the vote. Non militant suffragists plan noon prayers for votes for women.

A two year old boy fell from a moving train near Argenteuil Station in Paris. He was found unharmed on the tracks crying for his mother as rescuers searched the area after the carriage opened unexpectedly.
Off St Johns a fire raged for nine hours aboard the Cathagenian as 60 mile winds whipped seas. Two women and 24 passengers aided the crew in fighting the blaze while Captain McKillop weighed moving all to lifeboats. Relief came when steamers Numidian and Uranium answered wireless distress calls.
Columbia report states Governor Blease will not permit South Carolina troops to attend President elect Wilson's inauguration due to dislike of editor William Gonzales who would command the militia. The note suggests their stay at home to avoid potential humiliation for the state.
Walla Walla, Wash., Jan. 20. Cattle rustling is reported in the Walla Walla valley. Sherman Pettijohn of Prescott says he filed a complaint charging John Doe McGrew with stealing 11 head. Deputy Sheriff Lee Baynes pursues McGrew in Vansycle canyon. Charles Keith is jailed awaiting examination. Pettijohn reports 25 cattle missing from a neighboring farm and some sold to local meat dealers.
Moose lodges in the western division have voted to purchase Hot Lake sanatorium to house aged members. Pendleton and Walla Walla chapters are on record with others. Union county property includes 1080 acres. price runs into the thousands. F C Hamwell of Baker leads Moose negotiations for Walter Pierce, owner.
Chicago January 20 bonds offered for President Ryan of the Iron Workers and William Shape serving terms in Fort Leavenworth were turned down as unsatisfactory by Federal District Attorney Miller. Bonds for W E B Redding Bert Brown and W J McCalin were offered to the circuit court of appeal which will decide tomorrow whether Miller’s objections to Ryan and others bonds are valid.
WashingtonJan 20 The Supreme Court today overruled the Commerce Court decision that voided the Interstate Commerce Commission order raising rates for the Louisville and Nashville line between New Orleans and Mobile The ICC said the elevated rates had been in effect 20 years and were fully compensatory The Commerce Court had enjoined the ICC order and the case then went to the Supreme Court which adjourned after announcing the decision.
Judge Conley oversees the bribery case against Clarence Darrow as Earl Robers returns for the defense. The charge relates to bribing juror Robert B. Burn in the McNamara dynamite case, following Darrow’s recent acquittal on a separate bribery charge in the Lockwood matter. Delays have plagued the proceedings amid disputes over defense tactics and state charges.
Acting Secretary Winthrop said Sharpe’s charge that the navy is filled with desperate men is contradicted by statistics. He called the assertion absurd and said recruiting is effective and meticulous, admitting only men of good repute into the force.
President Taft traveled to New Haven to attend a Yale corporation meeting and sign to accept the chair of professor of law. He will not resign until March 4, returning to Washington tonight after the talks.
Olympia January 20 Senator Davis introduced a bill for amending the constitution to prohibit the sale manufacture and use of intoxicants. Representative Pierce proposed removing from the supreme court the power to declare acts unconstitutional unless the court is unanimous.
United States District Attorney McCormick plans two district court suits this week to test the Taft withdrawal order and its effect on titles to millions of acres of California oil lands. The action focuses on five hundred acres held by Midway Consolidated Oil Co and about forty other corporations, alleging undiscovered portions and involving hundreds of patents.
County Judge J W Maloney and Commissioner H M Cockburn returned from a statewide gathering in Portland where they defended their stance. They argued a single state engineer cannot advise all 35 counties and urged local experts instead. They cited underassessed county property and urged strict enforcement of existing laws to fix valuations. The convention backed using county funds in designated depositories drawing interest.
A violent fist fight broke out on the house floor between Speaker Pratt and Speaker pro tem Wood over presiding rights. They were separated before any injury occurred.
George F. Murray, from La Grande, wed in Union county, faced a spree and threats after marriage. He drew a pistol on his bride who fled to a livery stable and alerted police. Murray was jailed, later fined fifteen dollars, and released when his bride returned to reconcile.

Tokio Jan 20. War between Prince Katsura partisans and the Seiyukei faction renews. Katsura says he will form a new party to oppose the Seiyukei program to finish. Dissolution of the diet is imminent amid the political clash.
A two day blockage on the Walla Walla line left the Kenn dall vs the First National Bank of Milton case unable to reach Milton. Jurors witnesses and the plaintiff could not attend as trains from Spokane were rerouted by Umatilla and did not resume until 2 30 pm. Rail service between Pendleton and Milton remained isolated due to drifting snow and wind.
State Capitol in Salem reports Senator Calkins reintroduced a bill from the prior session. It would hold saloon keepers liable for damages on complaint by a habitual drunkard’s wife, mother or child.
London, Jan 20. A proviso against spiritualism stands in the will of Charles Leonard Sankey, a Nottinghamshire pottery manufacturer of Rosegarth, Bulwell Lane. It directs that if his wife becomes a professed follower of spiritualism, her interest under the will ceases. To enforce this, she must yearly declare she has had no dealings with spiritualism and has not allowed any related discussions in the house where his daughter resides.
Police moved through crowds of striking garment workers on January 20 in New York as violence flared. Eight strikers were badly injured, scores suffered bruises, and about a dozen were arrested after clashes with strikebreakers on Spring Street. Officers used drawn clubs to disperse thousands. The crowd blamed outsiders brought in to take jobs.

They estimate a hundred thousand dollars yearly cost to the government though the pension bureau has a higher estimate.
