Diminishing Timber Supply From Shifting U S Sources
Government bulletin traces how U S lumber supply has shifted since 1880 with Michigan, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, New York, Texas, Arkansas, Mississippi, Louisiana and Washington dominating early output. By 1908 the same states still produced about 60 percent, but state-level changes were drastic as virgin northern forests declined and southern western drains rose. Total timber use rose faster than population, reaching about 60 billion board feet last year across lumber, shingles, pulpwood and more, underscoring rising demand and scarcity risks. The report notes regional depletion and growing reliance on forest products for the economy.
