Jefferson Davis Relics Show Disguise Tales Not Confirmed
A New York Herald writer notes Davis did not wear a shawl as disguise when captured in 1865, with government garments stored in a safe including a muffler shawl and rain coat. Officials discount sensational stories of a female disguise and confirm no deception. Lincoln assassination relics also held for viewing under permit.

Paymaster General Kenny Retired. Speel Named Successor
Rear Admiral Kenny reached the age limit for active service and was placed on the retired list while remaining Paymaster General for the remainder of his temporary commission. John Niniger Speel, former fleet pay inspector of the European station, will be the next Paymaster General. Speel, nephew of former War Secretary Alexander Ramsey, has a strong service record. In New York, tribute to veteran editor Col William C Church is planned as Army and Navy Journal marks forty years. The journal, begun in 1863, grew from Civil War patriotic impulses with support from notable figures including Hale, Lowell, Longfellow, Bryant, Sumner, Beecher, and others.
