Coal famine hits eastern Oregon as dealers froze supply
The Baker City Democrat reports a growing coal shortage in eastern Oregon caused by dealers not stocking up. Utah and Wyoming mines operate at full capacity while Northwest demand rises. Railroads reduce daily coal orders, seek substitutes like Roslyn coal, and warn of limited supplies. Local towns receive pro rata shares and advise storing coal in summer to avoid shortages.
