A severe Midwest blizzard strands Chicago isolating the city from the world. Coal and milk supplies nearly exhausted. hospitals and the state insane asylum face shortages risking deaths. Trains sidetracked and roads kept clear for incoming freight. Minnesota traffic also blocked.
Minnesota reports major rail delays as a fierce storm paralyses rail traffic and wire service from the south and east. In New York City a bitter blizzard brings five deaths and widespread accidents with officials fearing higher toll if the storm endures. Alaska reports three lives lost in a long riding blizzard affecting the Valdez Fairbanks trade, with rescue parties seeking travelers stranded by extreme cold.
Snow plows were sent to rescue two passenger trains stuck in deep drifts amid a blizzard that hit the area in the last 24 hours. One train was near Steno Minnesota on the Chicago Milwaukee St Paul line, the other west of La Crosse on the Fleming North Western route. Job Scott, a leading county farmer, reported attending a gathering at the county agricultural association rooms this afternoon.

A 58 year old John Ferrin and 75 year old William Wood fought a duel in the basement of a Broadway grocery store. Ferrin shot Wood five times, killing him, after a longstanding taunt escalated from a Civil War era feud. Ferrin later wrote a note to police and waited in the basement drinking whiskey.
In Wailonk Wheb on January 15 Oscar Backman’s three infant children died in a kitchen blaze at the Backman home. Mrs Backman, left momentarily, rushed back to rescue them but could not enter the burning kitchen. The two older boys were found nearby in charred remains. the four year old shielded the two year old sibling as flames consumed the room. investigators suspect matches started the fire. bodies incinerated.
Washington Jan 11 reports say Republicans and insurgents move toward a temporary peace and agree to form a committee to investigate Ballinger Pinchot charges. Democrats press to name minority members. Hayes mediates amid tension over leadership and future conferences.
The sea at Marshfinid Ore washed ashore the first body from the Czarina wreck in which 24 lives were lost. The man found had no identifying marks on clothing. First Assistant Engineer Kentgel, after two hours in the water, recovers enough to go to the morgue.
Pembeton Portland local departs ten minutes later in the morning. Spokane train No. 8 will leave the city at 7 30 in the morning. The changes affect the Otmegon and Washington divisions with updated running times.
