Woman Dies After Gasoline Lamp Explosion

Santa Ana January 13 a wife telephoned her husband John Gowan to say the house was on fire and she was dying after a gasoline iron exploded while she tried to refill the front. Her husband rushed home, put out the blaze, and attempted to revive her but she died after doctors were summoned.

Three Freeze 10 Deaths Across Montana Storm

Helena Montana January 13 Three freeze to death in various parts of Montana with more deaths feared as a blizzard continues. Snow falls again and livestock losses mount while no relief from the storm is seen. Mercury reaches twenty below and rail traffic is disrupted with Great Northern blocked in the Finfoot country. Eleven hundred passengers are stranded on trains but are supplied with food and fires.

Gown Redeemed From Duty For Vivian Gould Fiance

In New York a gown worth 1400 dollars held at the customs house for duty was redeemed today and taken home. Brought from Paris by Lord Decios, the fiancé of Miss Vivian Gould, he arrived last night but could not pay and officials would not accept a check. The duty was a thousand dollars. The lord plans to marry Vivian Gould in February.

Governor Johnson Attacks Railroads in California

California's chief executive urged early consideration of the Stetson railroad regulation bill in a special message to the legislature. He cited specific rate disparities between California stations, arguing rates are set on the theory of all the traffic will bear and asserting railroad operation in the state is as cheap as anywhere, with many short hauls priced the same as longer ones.

Salem Jan. 13 The Oregon legislature moves 15 vetoed salary bill measures to the house agenda for Tuesday afternoon. Governor Chamberlain had announced he would veto all salary increases for county officials, with measures ranging from county judge, clerk, sheriff, recorder, treasurer, and school superintendent raises in Benton, Coos, Columbia, Marion, Wallowa, Klamath, Tillamook, and other counties. A McLoughlin home trustees bill was vetoed for removing the historic site from its original context.

Four Die in Rail Collision at Station

At Batavia New York a rear end collision on the New York Central killed four passengers in a Pullman sleeper and injured twenty. The crash occurred as a standing train was struck and telescoped by a following train. Rescue crews rushed to the scene and the injured were trapped under debris for hours before release.

Independence Kansas Jan 13 John Walker and Mary Walker aged brother and sister were found dead in their home ruins. Authorities suspect murder and robbery as money was said to be kept there. The house was set afire to hide the crime and barns and outbuildings burned. The horses were turned loose.

Man from Aspen Ends Life After Dinner In Tacoma Caf

Archie Shillaty, an Aspen, Colorado assayer about thirty, dined late in a Tacoma cafe and shot himself after the waiter began writing the bill. A pocket note shows premeditated suicide stating he planned a good meal before death to escape consumption.

The Oregon State Board removed Dr J D Plamondon from the eastern Oregon branch asylum post at Pendleton and left the office vacant. Governor Oswald West and State Treasurer T B Kay approved the action stating the state has a competent staff and no current need for a superintendent.

New High School Teacher Selected for Pendleton

Leroy Breithaupt, Oregon Agricultural College graduate, chosen by the Pendleton school board to fill the vacancy created by Prof Pate’s resignation. He will start at the beginning of the second semester on January 23 and is praised by President Kerr of the state police. Breithaupt earned high honors last June and led student activities, recently doing postgraduate work at Corvallis, with a focus on the agricultural department.

Whitefish Montana January 13 with temperatures twenty below zero eighty passengers on Great Northern trains No 3 and No 27 are stalled in mountains near Fielding as wind driven snowdrifts sap tracks. Rotary snowplows race from Cutbank and Whitefish but cannot clear the line. no food cars on either train and coal will last to Sunday. Fate of passengers unknown. May Release Traine Spokane General Superintendent Brown of the Great Northern said he expected the release of Nos 2 and 27 by midnight. Reports indicate progress toward the trails.
