Judge directs jurors on procedures and cautions against enforcing different statutes at once while urging equal treatment. He explains indictments require five of seven affirmative votes. JOHN F. HILL is named foreman for proceedings.

At 10 o'clock the January circuit court term began with seven men selected as grand jurors. Several jurors were excused for illness or citizenship paper issues. Foreman John F. Hill was named and jurors sworn. Judge Bean noted statutory instructions on local option laws libel arson and prize fighting. La Coose fined $50 after pleading guilty to pointing a gun at Chance Rogers. Petard Case delayed at prosecution's request.
The grand jury indicted A Perard for altering brands on 20 head of C A Johnsen sheep after a prior reference for correcting an indictment defect. Col Raley granted time to plead and filed a motion to dismiss for missing witness names. Ralph McBain pleaded guilty to stealing a colt and requested deferred sentence pending parole statements. The options include keeping Ruef in jail until a remittitur is issued, or releasing him on extortion and other charges with bail, while decisions loom on bribery prosecutions and Ruef’s testimony.
Commissioners Walker and Lee visited Athena to assess a petition for a steel bridge at Tom Watts crossing on Pine Creek after completing a county session. Earlier they inspected ongoing bridge work at Echo, meeting public needs with field checks and official inquiry.
John Ony and others report circuit court findings in Grant county while noting the John Day Valley awaits a railroad. A projected line from Pilot Rock through Camas Prairie to Starkey Prairie could extend into Harney and John Day valleys, boosting mining, livestock, fruit production, hot springs, lakes, and tourism, and benefitting Pendleton’s economy.
Judge Dunne refused the bail motion for ex mayor Schmitz, ruling no bail until remittitur arrives from the appellate bench within 30 days. Lawyers argued the defendant’s right to bail, with DA Cook opposing. It is believed Schmitz may appeal to the Supreme Court to seek bail.
Ten year old Etta Fink was shot in the right breast when she rushed to protect her dog. Smith, 18, with a companion, went to the Fink home announcing intent to kill the dog. Smith fled after firing the shot as a manhunt followed.
Tax Day in New York marks the opening of the annual assessment books for real and personal property. Hundreds register objections to valuations, with corporations appearing in Manhattan and others in their respective borough offices. The books stay open through March 31.
George Putnam editor of the Medford Tribune was convicted Saturday evening in Jacksonville Oregon for criticizing grand jury actions. He received a $150 fine and was released on bonds pending appeal.
San Francisco January 14 It was learned today that Rev Dr Edward J Hanna will be proclaimed coadjutor archbishop of San Francisco succeeding the late Archbishop Montgomery at the Vatican.
W A Holmes files in circuit court for a writ of habeas corpus against guardian Daley E B Knotts to force release of his two children. The suit, via McCourt and Phelps, follows the guardian appointment by the late mother, whose will named her sister’s care. Holmes and the mother had divorced and the mother remarried before her death.
A pleasant whist party was hosted by Mr and Mrs Al Richardson on Marne Street. About 16 friends attended and spent a delightful evening.
London buzzes with a rumor that former U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt plans to move to London after his term ends. The claim centers on his intent to study the "narece of all nations" and to live abroad, sparking curiosity about his post presidency life.
In New York on January 13 the Thaw trial heard Walter H. Wilkeming identify a Madison Square Garden plan after Assistant Attorney Garvin outlined the shooting facts. Mrs. Thaw is expected to testify Friday along with Evelyn Thaw and medical experts. The state rested after presenting the killing narrative, implying Jerome has more crucial evidence for rebuttal.
Paris January 1. An article in Action quotes Captain Fremont naval attaché at the U S legation praising the efficiency of the American fleet. The interview stirred attention in France opposing McClure's article by Reuterdahl which had seen wide publicity.
William H. Tevis filed suit in San Francisco alleging criminal libel against R. A. Crothers and the Fremont Order of the Bulletin. He claims a March 16, 1907 story falsely accused him of paying Abe Ruef bribe money to secure Bay Cities Water plant acceptance.
Carson City January 13 Governor Sparks has called the state legislature into a special session to address the industrial situation. Lieutenant Governor Dickerson is among the arrivals as members convene for tomorrow's opening.
Washington January 13. Three submarine boats are provided for the West Coast with two for Puget Sound and a third for Grays Harbor under a resolution introduced in the Senate by Senator Ankeny.
Linmore Pierce renowned Modern Woodmen organizer arrives in Pendleton to lead a two months membership drive. A camp meeting is set for tomorrow night to finalize plans and formally launch the campaign. Pierce recently came from Milton where a large initiation and installation occurred with 20 new members added and new officers installed before a crowd of over 200, including about 60 from Walla Walla.
R. L. Sabin filed a combined suit for collection against J. C. Cummings and Henry Adams of Weston. The action seeks $401.49 assigned from Portland creditors Windhams & Kerr Bros. $340.84, Pacific Coast Syrup Co. $36.05, Laucker King & Cake Soap Co. $20.10. Peter son, Peterson & Wilson represents the plaintiff.
Chicago on June 13 reports the worst blizzard of the year with all telegraph wires down. Postal Telegraph lines to the east and west are cut as Western Union has one wire to New York. Trains are delayed or abandoned and run on improvised schedules. Milwaukee street cars halted as conduits flood.
Fifteen dollar a week chorus girls owning automobiles and diamonds must prove how they acquired these luxuries under the new tax day measures in New York. Tax commissioners vow to collect taxes on property like diamond tiaras and “devil wagons,” insisting the chorus girls reveal sources or pay or flee the wrath to come. The tone is stern as collectors press their mission despite bids of charm.
New York on January 13 reports the suspension of the firm of Robert Maclay & Company announced today on the stock exchange.
Mrs. Mabel Young Warner, plaintiff in a civil estate suit and criminal forgery case, reports an unknown man entered her kitchen Saturday evening and grasped her throat. She fought free, leaving visible fingerprints to back her account. Police and private detectives searched the area but found no trace of the assailant.

London dispatch from Ceylon reports Sir Thomas Lipton visiting there will challenge for the American Cup in 1909. Lipton plans to contest the sailing trophy, continuing his long pursuit of the prize.
