A severe cyclone swept through Reapee Penn on January 10 causing extensive damage and loss of life. Strong winds toppled buildings including the Reading rail mill, overturned factory frames, and scattered debris as rain and hail accompanied the storm. About 175 to 250 workers, mainly women, were affected as the mill suffered collapse and numerous injuries.
Reports from Reapina and nearby areas describe a deadly silk mill wreck with many missing and dead. By dawn about a dozen more bodies were recovered and the work crew cleared debris through the night, while surrounding dwellings suffered storm damage and power lines were down.
