Rusk of Joseph in the speaker chair and Ben Selling of Portland in the senate president chair on the first ballot. Bowerman's supporters split. Selling led in the senate vote with 17 to Bowerman 9. Rusk won the speakership amid a flurry of committee assignments and calendar posts as Ritner of Umatilla was named calendar clerk.

Seventeen Men Drowned In Barges Near Provincetown
Provincetown, Maas, Jan 10. Seventeen men were drowned today when three barges sunk near here. The barges were being towed by the tug Lukens. Lifeboat crews mounted a rescue but failed. Seven perished on the first barge and five on each of the others.
