Panicked by controversy, Gifford Pinchot defended his actions and criticized the handling of Glavis cases. He said Price and Shaw risked positions to expose what they believed was public property danger in Alaska, while urging no further action against them.
Washington January 7 a special cabinet meeting was called for three o clock this afternoon to advance consideration of the Ballinger Pinchot controversy which had become the day s absorbing issue. The matter was discussed at a regular cabinet meeting but this afternoon the secretaries were summoned to the White House by telephone.
Washington Jan 7 The Ballinger Pinchot dispute intensified as Pinchot’s letter to Senator Dolliver was read in the Senate. He defends Glavis and associates Price and Shaw and accuses the Interior Department of wrongfully publicizing private information about Cunningham coal land claims in Alaska. The letter argues the president erred in removing Glavis and contends secrecy harms public opinion and public ownership interests.
William D. Haywood, former Western Federation of Miners secretary, denounces Theodore Roosevelt and Massachusetts Governor Draper in a Lynn speech. Haywood calls Draper a "pink and white politician" and criticizes him for fleeing Ludlow during the crisis, contrasting him with Roosevelt’s rumored stance.
In a long running dispute, County Judge Girland hears the demurrer to renewed challenges to Joseph L. Stubblefield’s will. About 200000 dollars and the Stubblefield home in Walla Walla are at stake as heirs claim improper probate and trustees’ restrictive management. The will set a home for aged widows and orphans in Oregon and Washington, with the city raising 10000 for site and building. The trust funds were to endure as an endowment while the home used interest for maintenance. The case follows earlier actions by Mrs Stubblefield and the trustees’ settlement.
In Ipsilan Michigan a gang of two yeggs terrorized stores then stormed the railroad station. Bag gagemaster Henry Erner was killed and telegraph operator Morgan Emmett mortally wounded as a pistol battle ensued. A bandit, Brier, died. another robber escaped as officers captured the remaining assailant.
Chicago reports a severe cold wave with a four degree below zero reading. The persistent freeze has exhausted coal reserves and left manufacturers and institutions unable to operate without rapid fuel relief within 48 hours. Railroads are urged to move coal into Chicago yards as thousands of cars sit idle on sidings.
Wermann announces pretrial preparations for former Congressman Binger Hermann linked to the Blue Mountain forest reserve fraud. Jury selection panel drawn today as the case moves toward opening next Monday. Hermann represented the first congressional district at the time of indictment.
President Taft urged Congress to create a five judge United States court of commerce with exclusive jurisdiction over Interstate Commerce Commission orders. The court would review enforcement actions, injunctions, mandamus proceedings, and certain Elkins Act cases, with rapid finality subject only to Supreme Court review. He would appoint five circuit judges and allow reassignment to districts as needed.
George Halgh, a 40 year old Portland burglar, confesses to eleven Portland burglaries. A former Pendleton resident, his mother resides there and his wife, younger, faced a nervous breakdown upon his arrest. He planned to use plunder to appease his wife, and his case advances to the grand jury.
Mrs Maud Myrtle Johnson also known as Maud Baney or Helen Hazleton broke down on news she will be taken to Vancouver for extradition. Governor Benson granted extradition papers after delays and Sheriff D W Sappington will escort her with the baby to the west. She is accused of swindling railroad companies with fake damage suits across the west. If Vancouver fails to convict, she faces further charges in California.
Omden Mille, who raced across the continent to attend his father O Mills funeral, arrived by Millbrae at 6 30 this morning on a special Sacramento train. The funeral for Mills will be held at 7 this afternoon.
Sawtelle California reports seven hearses bearing eight members of the Fernandez Valdez Reyes and Proda do families who died from poison after a New Year family banquet. They left Sawtelle for Santa Monica Catholic church where funeral services were held today.
In Seattle a wife sought divorce from Harry L. Blitz alleging his years in the so called monkey man act and long days at pay streak shows left him brutal and cruel. The judge granted the divorce and alimony after hearing the evidence. Blitz was reported to be earning about $100 a month in Portland.
Thomas Payne a longtime Washington resident and prominent state figure died at his Seattle home Thursday at age 55 after a year of illness. Born in New York City he moved to Pittsburgh then to Washington in 1888 where he helped build Snohomish telephone service and later practiced law. He served in the first state legislature and Senate from Skagit county. His wife survives him.
Des Moines reports Iowa faces a bitter cold with a looming fuel shortage. Governor Carroll and the state railroad commissioners issued an order banning railroads from diverting coal in transit for their own use. Officials of nearly all railroads said they would comply.
Mobile, Jan. 7. Word reached here today of a terrible earthquake that shook Swan Island, 900 miles away in the Caribbean Sea on January 1. Captain Olsen of the fruit steamer Corinto, in this harbor, said the island rocked for half an hour. Water in the island harbor boiled during the heaviest tremor. Five shocks were felt.
New York police hunt for Tena Finkelstein the "human mole" after an underground trench he dug beneath Ludlow Street to rob Zirinsky's jewelry store collapsed. His wife confessed he planned a tunnel entry and likely smothered himself in the resulting shaft.
