Colum bia River Dammed by Okanogan Glacier
Government geologists report the Columbia River was dammed by the Okanogan glacier in eastern Washington. They say the glacier filled the Grand Coulee and canyon with ice, creating a 400 foot fall where the river once roared. The moraine marks the glacier’s southern limit, with basalt blocks and bedrock in the ancient channel near Coulee City. The retreat left desert shrubs where the river once surged.
