Leap Year Marriages Lag in Umatilla County

In 1912 only 197 couples sought marriage licenses in Umatilla County, down from 1911 and 1910. December and September led in licenses, while June showed improvement. overall, autumn and winter fared better for Cupid than spring and summer. Divorce filings rose to 65 suits with 11 decrees issued. a suffragette joke closes the item.

Divorced in Record Time by Hermiston Contractor

Col H G Newport won a rapid divorce from Anna Newport after desertion alleged May 20 1911. The stipulation allowed swift decree with 20000 to the wife for shared property and 96 for taxes. Property near Hermiston transferred to Col J H Raley as part of settlement. Newport and Anna wed in Baker in 1904. Raley Raley and KR Johnson represented the plaintiff.

Glee Club Program Delights University Audience

An Oregon theater crowd enjoyed two hours of entertainment by twenty five members of the state university glee club. The varied program featured classical pieces like The Sword of Perm and A Plainman’s Song plus bass solos by M. L. Bowman and a ventriloquism bit with Jerard Stannard and Fortmiller. Shaver and Broadbridge performed parodies while De Stannard sang Call John and John Stannard closed with Rocked in the Cradle of the Jeep.

Parcels Post Goes Into Effect Across Nation

The new parcels post system starts today in all post offices, affecting every city rural and railway route. Rates range from 5 cents per pound up to 12 cents for higher zones with 50 cent insured value up to 50 dollars, and stamps for the Panama Panama Pacific Exposition are issued in 1 2 5 and 10 cent denominations with Balboa Gatun Locks Golden Gate and the Discovery of San Francisco Bay pictured.

Pendleton set new construction records in 1912 with about 3.74 million dollars spent on erecting and repairing structures.
