Pendleton man Kills Self in Athena Jail Cell
Dan Avery, about 40, a Pendleton resident and former Pendleton saloon roustabout, died by suicide in the Athena jail less than an hour after being placed in custody. He severed his jugular vein and windpipe with a broken pint bottle, reportedly while suffering delirium tremens after being captured by the marshal. Coroner Folsom was notified and may not hold an inquest. Avery had been staying with Jerry St. Dennis on the reservation and had wandered to Athena during a delirium tremens episode.
